GRAND JUNCTION-The opening round of the 2016 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference was not friendly to the Adams State University Grizzlies, who entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed, as they were defeated by the No. 1 seeded and host Colorado Mesa University Mavericks 9-1 in five innings on Thursday night.
Because of rain storms that blew through the Western Slope area on Thursday morning, the tournament was postponed until noon and only the opening round of the double elimination tournament was played. Adams State will now move to the bottom half of the bracket and take on No.4 seeded Regis, who lost to No. 5 seeded Colorado Mines, 2-0, at 10:45 a.m.
In Thursday's game, ASU only had three hits with their only run coming on a solo home from
Marissa Harmon, her tenth on the season, to deep center field.Â
Adams State allowed the Mavericks to score seven runs in the first two innings including two home runs from senior Makayla Kovac, who was named the RMAC Offensive Player of the Year.
