RMAC Tournament bracket

ALAMOSA, Colo. (May 8, 2016)—
In their regular season finale, the Adams State University Grizzlies fell to the Colorado State University-Pueblo ThunderWolves by a score of 18-3.

For the entire game, the Grizzlies (22-26, 18-17 RMAC) struggled to gain any sort of momentum and failed to respond to yet another quick start from the ThunderWolves. Strong winds and dark clouds that delayed the game from its original noon start forecasted an eerie backdrop on the type of day Grizzly pitchers would be forced to face.

Like Saturday's matchup, CSU-Pueblo started Sunday's game with solid offensive production in the first four frames. The ThunderWolves snagged four runs in both the first and second innings, followed by another five runs in both the fourth and fifth innings.  The 18 runs off 22 hits in four innings were more than enough to keep Adams State in the rearview mirror.

Outside the offensive production from Dillion Granzella and Chris Morley, the Grizzly offense struggled against CSU-Pueblo. ThunderWolves' pitcher Kyle Peeler (4-2) flirted with a "no-no" through three innings of play before the junior walked Michael Downs in the bottom of the third. With Downs on first, Morley was the Grizzlies' next at-bat and responded with a home run that was slammed deep into right field. Morley hit another home run in the bottom of the sixth, making him responsible for all three Grizzly runs on the day.

In their last home game, Morley hit 2-for-3 with three RBI and two home runs as Granzella went 2-for-4 at the plate. Fellow senior Tyler Thurston was responsible for a triple to left center during the seventh.

Head Coach Jim Capra put five pitchers on the mound against the ThunderWolves on Sunday. Dylan Sherry (1-3) unfortunately earned the loss against CSU-Pueblo in one inning of work. Junior Ryan Ferguson was able to bring stability to the mound when he was called up mid-way through the fourth inning. In three complete innings, Ferguson faced 16 batters and only allowed three runs.

The Grizzlies finish the regular season in second place of the RMAC Plains Division with a 22-26 overall record and an 18-17 record in conference play. It marks the first time that the program has produced a winning conference record since returning as a varsity program in 2013.

Next up for Adams State is a meeting with Colorado Mesa University in the opening round of the RMAC Tournament. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. from Grand Junction on May 12. A complete tournament bracket can be found here.
