ALAMOSA, Colo. (September 17, 2016) – The 51
st annual Musket Game ended in defeat for Adams State University as Fort Lewis College walked away with a 21-16 win on Saturday afternoon from Rex Field.
Despite Fort Lewis controlling the ball for over 12 minutes in the first quarter, the Adams State defense kept the Skyhawk offense silent thanks to two blocked field goal attempts by
Demari Reynolds. The senior's edge rush forced the first two FLC drives to end with nothing to show for on the scoreboard. Meanwhile the Adams State offense started slow with a pair of first quarter drives that ended with a punt.
FLC's Bo Coleman opened the game's scoring with a 7-yard sprint to the corner of the endzone in the second. The Grizzlies responded with a 41-yard
Zach Cimaglia field goal on ASU's next drive to tighten the gap to 7-3. Coleman added a 24-yard rushing touchdown late in the quarter but ASU responded on their final drive of the half with a 24-yard Cimaglia field goal to take the game to halftime with the Grizzlies trailing, 14-6.
The Grizzlies came within a point at 14-13 in the third quarter thanks to a
Jorge Hernandez to
Mason Craig 10-yard touchdown throw. It marked Craig's first collegiate touchdown. The Skyhawks quickly answered with a 2 play, 65 yard drive as Coleman connected with Arealous Hughes on a 63-yard touchdown pass. The game's scoring concluded with another Cimaglia field goal midway through the third. Cimaglia's 19-yard chip shot capped off a 16 play, 74 yard drive.
Hernandez finished the game 27-of-50 for 313 yards and a touchdown. The junior transfer often targeted
Darvin McCauley who had a game-high 6 receptions and 93 yards. Adams State held the edge in passing but the Skyhawks owned the ground game with 359 total rushing yards. The attacked was led by PJ Hall and Drake Griffin who rushed for 159 and 125 yards, respectively.
Morris Gilbert led the ASU defense with 12 total tackles (4 solo) along with a pass breakup.
John Reed and
John Land each added 11 tackles. Along with his two blocked field goals, Reynolds added 4 total tackles on the day.
Cimaglia went 3-for-4 on field goal attempts with his lone miss of 46-yards coming in the fourth quarter. Cimaglia also netted a punt average of 38.4.
The Grizzlies remain home next week as they face Chadron State College at 1:05 p.m. from Rex Field.
