ALAMOSA, Colo. (January 14, 2017) – Plachy Hall Gym witnessed yet another thrilling finish as Adams State University held on for a 75-73 victory over Black Hills State University on Saturday night.
The Yellow Jackets (5-13, 2-10 RMAC) held the ball on the final play but a corner three-point attempt by Fraser Malcolm bounced off the rim to give Adams State (8-10, 5-7 RMAC) their third consecutive victory. The win also improves ASU's home record to 4-3 on the season.
Despite the close finish it was Adams State who held the lead for the majority of the game. Black Hills State took a brief 5-4 lead but
Shane Johnson drained a three-pointer less than a minute later to push Adams State back in front for good.
The Grizzlies obtained their largest lead of 12 points early in the second half but the Yellow Jackets answered on their next possession with a three followed by two free throws via an ASU foul on the made three-point basket. The five-point swing kept the game close as Black Hills State fought back to make it a one possession affair on multiple occasions moving forward.

Brandon Sly led the charge for Adams State in retaining the lead. In the second half, the junior went 3-of-6 from the field and 10-of-10 from the line. Sly finished with a game-high 26 points and a perfect 16-of-16 mark from the charity stripe. For the game the Grizzlies went 31-of-35 (88.6%) from the line. Black Hills State shot 13-of-18 (72.2%) from the free throw line.
Bryan Umoru and
Shane Johnson each added 14 points to join Sly in double figures as
Kevin Dorsey chipped in 9 points off the bench.
Adams State shot 45.2 percent (19-42) from the field and 46.2 percent (6-13) from downtown.
The Grizzlies have now shot atleast 45 percent from the field and 40 percent from three during their three-game winning streak.
Adams State remains home next weekend against Chadron State College (Jan. 20) and Regis University (Jan. 21). Both games are slated for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
