KEARNEY, Neb. (January 16th, 2017) --- The Adams State wrestling team could not build on last weekend's upset. The team traveled all the way to Kearney, Nebraska to battle it out with several teams. The opening duel with Newman University was canceled on their end due to weather and would later be replaced by the host school, Nebraska Kearney.
Â
Due to Newman's withdrawal, the Grizzlies started the day with No. 9 California Baptist. The contest did not go well for Adams.
Darek Huff's (125) fall over Marrio Barrios and
Martin Ramirez's (133) 15-0 tech fall victory over Donovin Guerrero would provide the only 11 points for ASU. California Baptist would win every remaining weight class to cruise to an easy 39-11 victory. Â Â
Â
Next up was Lindenwood University. At the 141 pound weight class
Joshua Salas won a 7-2 decision over Derek Heil. At 157,
Gavin Davy pinned Colton Orlando to get another Adams win. Even though Lindenwood won the rest of the matches, the Grizzlies were not dominated. The team would lose narrow decisions, which could have easily gone the right way for the Grizzlies. Nevertheless, Lindenwood would take the bout 33-9.
Â
Last in line was the number 5 team in the nation who also had the luxury of wrestling at home. Nebraska Kearney secured 3 pinfall victories over Adams to rack up 18 team points. Not to be outdone, the Grizzlies would land 2 pinfalls of their own. These falls came at the 133 level when
Martin Ramirez took down JD Rader at the 3:27 mark. The other occurred when
Khalil Gipson ended Corey Van Dorn's day only 1:00 into the match. The difference would be a tech fall and a cluster of decisions that went Kearney's way. The final was 35-12 in favor of the home team.
Â
The wrestling team will travel to Las Vegas, New Mexico for their next match with New Mexico Highlands on January 19
th at 6:00pm. Â
