ALAMOSA, Colo. (January 24th, 2017) – The Adams State University wrestling team finally returns home after having been on the road for quite some time, facing mostly ranked opponents. The team hosts Chardon State on Friday at 6:00pm and Colorado Mines on Saturday at 6:00pm.
Recently For Adams State Wrestling:
The Grizzlies have been on the road since January 7
th where they have faced three ranked teams, with two of those sitting in the Top 10. Stiff competition and close hearbreakers have put Adams State on their current five game losing streak. The silver-lining for this weekend's contests is that the Grizzlies are a perfect 1-0 at home with the early January win over No. 14 Fort Hays.
About Chadron State:
The Eagles are a respectable 5-1 (4-0 RMAC) this season. Their only loss came at the hands No. 8 Central Oklahoma by a final score of 20-18. The Grizzlies lost to Central Oklahoma also only a few days ago by a much wider margin 33-9. Ever since 2017 started, Chadron has been in very tight matchups mostly. Four of their five duels occurring this year have been decided by two points or less. The key for Adams State will be to keep the score close, and get a surge from someone in an unexpected weight class. Chadron boasts three nationally ranked wrestlers. No. 12 Brandon Kile at 125, No. 9 Taylor Summers at 133, and No. 8 Chance Helmick will all prove to be tough matchups for the Grizzlies on Friday.
Last Meeting: The Grizzlies faced the Eagles on January 22
nd, 2016 in a 25-19 losing effort.
Ian Wingstrom,
Martin Ramirez, Joe Bencomo, Richard Bencomo, and
Tuli Laulu all won their weight classes, but the team would fall short on that day.
About Colorado Mines: The Orediggers are not doing so well this season sitting at 3-6 (0-3 RMAC). While boasting a slightly better record than the Grizzlies, the Orediggers schedule has been much weaker. Mines has wrestled only two ranked schools, compared to Adams who has wrestled four. CSM also lost to the only team that ASU has beaten, Fort Hays.
Last Meeting: The previous meeting between these teams was not a very competitive one with the Grizzlies receiving a 37-13 loss.
Ian Wingstrom,
Martin Ramirez, and Joe Bencomo all won their matches in the team's losing effort.
Up Next: The Grizzlies will head to Colorado Springs next weekend for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championships. For more information on the RMAC championship, visit
