ALAMOSA, Colo. (January 27th, 2017) --- The fans in Plachy hall got quite the show tonight as they cheered on the Adams State wrestling team against Chadron. The contest was neck and neck until the final horn. Unfortunately, the Grizzlies were on the wrong side of the final, losing 21-18.
The night started with a trading of decisions in the first two weight classes.
Darek Huff won 4-2 over No. 12 ranked Brandon Kile at 125 pounds. A rare loss came at 133 pounds as No. 12 Taylor Summers beat No. 7
Martin Ramirez 3-0. With the score tied 3-3, the teams again traded points, this time with back to back pinfalls. The first came in the 141 pound class from
Dylan Udero over Luke Zeiger at the 6:09 mark. Udero had seemingly pinned his opponent in the first, but the referee said otherwise, leading to the second period fall. The Eagles returned the favor at the 149 pound level when Casey Glassgow pinned
Devin Vasquez at the 5:00 mark. The trend continued for the next two matches with
Gavin Davy dropping an 8-7 decision to Johnny Porter and
Isaac Lopez winning his decision 8-3 over Reed Burgener.
Koery Windham would be pinned at 4:35 in the 174 pound class by No. 8 Chance Helmick to put Chadron up 18-12. At 184 and 197, both Grizzlies went in as underdogs trying to keep the duel alive.
Nevada Bencomo pulled out a 4-2 decision over Willy Cogdill and
Khalil Gipson did the same with a 10-7 decision over Matthew Kindler. Tied at 18, the whole night came down to the heavyweight bout. Down 4-2 with time running out in the third,
Tuli Laulu mustered all of his strength to attempt some offense and nearly got to his feet but the clock would hit zero just as he got up. Cooper Cogdill won a 4- 2 decision giving Chadron State the 21-18 victory.
The team will head to Colorado Springs for the RMAC Championships next Saturday, February 4
th.
