MBB | CSU-Pueblo & New Mexico Highlands Preview

ALAMOSA, Colo. (January 31, 2017) – With less than a month remaining in the regular season, Adams State University takes to the road this weekend against Colorado State University-Pueblo and New Mexico Highlands University. Tip-off with CSU-Pueblo on Feb. 3rd is set for 7:30pm with the New Mexico Highlands game on Feb. 4th set for 7pm.

Last Time Out
A close back-and-forth matchup did not end in Adams State's favor as No. 22 Colorado School of Mines walked away with a 75-66 win on Jan. 28th from Lockridge Arena. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for ASU. The game with the Orediggers featured 10 lead changes and a tied score on 8 occasions. The game remained close throughout but the difference came in the final 4:35 as the Orediggers outscored the Grizzlies 16-7. During that span ASU shot 2-of-7 from the free throw line and 2-of-8 from the field. Colorado Mines countered by shooting 9-of-9 from the line and 4-of-4 from the field.
 
Scouting The ThunderWolves
CSU-Pueblo is 6-2 since the start of 2017 and own a 7-1 record when playing in Massari Arena. The ThunderWolves are coming off a 2-0 road campaign last weekend with wins at Chadron State (85-55) and Regis University (87-81). The team ranks second in the RMAC with 85.2 points per game. Leading the way is junior forward Mark Williams' team-best 14.3 points per game. Senior guard Rico Spikes owns a team-best 6.8 rebounds per game along with 12.8 points per game. Senior center Nelson Kahler not only posts 11.9 points per game but an RMAC-best 3.3 blocks per game. With Kahler leading defensive efforts, the ThunderWolves rank first in the RMAC with 5.6 blocks per game. Head Coach Ralph Turner is in his sixth season at the helm of CSU-Pueblo.

Scouting The Cowboys
An 85-80 road win against Chadron State on Saturday moved the Cowboys to an 8-12, 6-9 RMAC record entering weekend play. Ron Lawton is the team's leading scorer at 16.4 points per game, however, Marlon Johnson averages a double-double. With 13.9 points per game and 10.3 rebounds per game, Johnson has eight double-doubles on the season. Craig Snow is in his third season as Head Coach of the program.

Last We Met
The Grizzlies defeated New Mexico Highlands, 85-72, at home on 12/2/16 for their first conference win of the season. The following night CSU-Pueblo defeated Adams State in Alamosa by a score of 80-75.

Looking Ahead
Adams State returns to Plachy Hall on Feb. 10th and 11th. The Grizzlies host Colorado Mesa University on 2/10 and Western State Colorado University on 2/11. Both games tip-off at 7:30pm.
