COLORADO SPRINGS (January 6, 2017) -- A 42-32 Adams State University lead near the end of the first half was erased by the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs who made a season-high 17 three-pointers on Friday night to pull away for a 94-81 victory.
Second half woes continued to plague the Grizzlies (5-10, 2-7 RMAC) who shot 40 percent (14-35) after shooting at a 48.2 percent clip in the opening stanza.
A combined 21 first half points from
Brandon Sly and
Bryan Umoru translated into a 42-39 halftime lead for Adams State but momentum quickly shifted towards UCCS. The Mountain Lions (5-8, 4-4 RMAC) responded after the break by shooting 70.4 percent (19-27) from the field while knocking down 11 of their 17 three-pointers. Their efforts were paced by Justin Smith's 18 second half points. Smith finished with a game-high 26 points and 9 rebounds.
A Umoru trifecta with three minutes before halftime gave ASU it's largest lead of 10 points at 42-32 but UCCS answered with a 7-0 run to close the half. A 19-6 UCCS run to begin the second half pushed the Mountain Lions in control with a 58-48 advantage with 13:42 remaining.
A
Caleb Wroten layup minutes later cut the UCCS lead to two points at 60-58 but the Mountain Lions followed with another big run to establish their largest lead of 19 points to open the game up to an 86-67 score in favor of UCCS.
Sly posted 20 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 steals in the loss. The junior has now scored in double figures in 13 of ASU's 15 games. Umoru finished with 10 points as
Brandon Pasker,
Shane Johnson, and
Jakolbhi Gillette each chipped in 9. Gillette's 9 points served as a season-high as the senior went 3-of-4 from downtown.
The Grizzlies once again showed their depth as the ASU bench outscored the UCCS bench, 41-22.
Adams State is back on the hardwood tomorrow night at Metropolitan State University of Denver. Tip-off is at 7pm.
