MSOC | Grizzlies Lose a Thriller to Rangers

ALAMOSA - Adams State University men's soccer team fell to Regis University Sunday afternoon for senior day. The game was a close one, ending 1-0.

The first half started out in favor of the Grizzlies. In the first few minutes, the Grizzlies had a scoring chance when Marco Castro led Drayden Ricks with a header opportunity that missed wide left. Ruben Molinar had a couple chances later when he sent a missile from way out that tailed wide right. Regis goalkeeper, Chase Webert, saved a header from Molinar a couple minutes later.

The momentum shifted in favor of Regis later in the first half. The Grizzlies goalkeeper, Austin Baumeister, prevented a Rangers goal when a perfectly placed corner kick led to a header on goal that Baumeister was ready for. The Rangers struck first when Luca Kother found the back of the net off a rebound in the 36th minute. The remainder of the first half went scoreless.

The second half was one for the ages. The Grizzlies dominated offensively having many opportunities to even up the score. Mario Castro and Drayden Ricks both had header opportunities early in the second half only to miss by a few feet. Carlos Castro attempted a bicycle kick shortly after that ended up a few feet too high from tying the game. After a penalty, Austin Baumeister launched a shot from midfield when Regis goalkeeper, Chase Webert, used all of his 6'1 frame to bat the ball over the net for the save.

In the last few minutes of the game, Adams State had some good looks at the net. Adams State brought Baumeister into the box for a corner kick. The 6'3 goalkeeper battled with a Regis defender for position as the corner kick found Baumeister but it didn't find the net as the header went wide left. After another penalty with only seconds remaining, the Grizzlies had one last chance to tie it all up with a free kick. Howard Samuel out leaped the Regis defenders but his header went high as the Rangers would go on to win the game, 1-0.

The contest was loaded with offense as both teams combined for 32 shots and 11 on goal. There were 23 fouls and three yellow cards in the game.

With the loss, the Grizzlies fall to 4-7-1 in conference play. Regis jumps Adams State one spot in the rankings with a 5-7 record. Adams State drops to 7th in the conference as Regis moves into the 6th spot. The top six teams qualify for the RMAC tournament.

Adams State has two games remaining in the 2017 season. The Grizzlies will travel to Durango, Colorado to take on Fort Lewis University this Friday at 3 PM in a crucial conference matchup. The Grizzlies defeated the Skyhawks, 2-1, earlier in the season.
