Golden, Colorado– The Adams State University volleyball team (14-14, 10-8 RMAC) ended its season tonight in an eerily similar way that it did a season ago. The Grizzlies could not hold on to a 2-0 lead that would have given them the RMAC upset of the year, as they lost the final three sets to No. 17 Colorado Mines (24-4) in the first round of the RMAC Tournament.
Last season, the Grizzlies were up 2-1 on a heavily favored Orediggers team in the 2016 RMAC Tournament. With the upset in hand, Mines went on a third set 12-1 run which would change the whole night. Tonight's result may sting a bit more.
ASU tied things up 24-24 late in the first.
Allie Miller would later hit an ace on a match point to give Adams State a first set victory. The second set would go to the Grizzlies a bit easier 25-18. A shocked Mines crowd then rallied their team. A late comeback attempt in the third fell short as the Orediggers took set three 25-22. The fourth was a blowout and even included an eight point run for the home team in a 25-13 win. A crucial fifth set for both teams began fairly even until the Orediggers went on an 8-2 run that Adams would not recover from. Mines won the fifth 15-9 to advance in the tournament.
On the offensive side,
Mallory Grimsrud,
Julianna Zamora, and
Hannah Goddard all hit double-digits in kills with 19, 16, and 16 respectively.
Rachel Ringler added 47 assists. Defensively, Ringler and Grimsrud recorded seven blocks each while
Gabrielle Timmen added 18 digs. Mines was led by Madeline Behr with 19 kills.
