ALAMOSA – Numerous school and conference records fell today in a high-shooting Adams State University football loss to Colorado School of Mines this Saturday. The team fell, 24-52, but set the single-game record in receptions and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference record in longest punt.
Â
Kane Bowen was the quiet hero of the day. The freshman set the RMAC record with a punt of 93 yards, kicking from seven yards deep in his own end zone that rolled to the opponent's two-yard line. He had four punts for 251 yards, averaging 62.8 yards per punt, just .2 off the RMAC record average in a game. Three of his punts were inside the 20 and three of 50 or more yards. He also had a 73 yard punt that was downed at the one.
Â
In normal fashion,
Chad Hovasse had another extraordinary game, catching a new school record 15 receptions for 162 yard and a pair of touchdowns. Hovasse, who now has the top-3 marks in school history for single-game receptions, broke his own record set this season of 14 receptions. He had 10 first-half receptions, then back-to-back catches to start the second. He would remain quiet until the final drive where he caught three passes. He would've had another reception, but the play was called back for holding.
Â
Hovasse, the school record holder in career receptions, was looking to be on pace to pass two other records today. He is now just 33 yards from breaking the school record in career receiving yards, while his extraordinary effort put the single-season reception record into view, needing just six catches to tie the mark. Both records are held by Chris Perry, who had one of the best receiving season in Division II history with 88 catches, more than 1,700 yards and 21 touchdowns. Hovasse is also just three touchdowns from tying Perry in career touchdown receptions.
Â
Marquese Surrell also had a stellar game, as he eight catches for 145 yards, including a 67-yard touchdown in which he made a spectacular circus-catch.
Â
On the dishing out end of the passing game was
Nick Rooney, who stepped back into form despite very heavy wind. The junior was 40-58 throwing for 410 yards and three touchdowns.
Â
The game looked to be in the Adams State favor as the Grizzlies jumped out to a 21-7 lead in the first quarter. Mines would claw back, tying the game at 24 apiece at half. The Orediggers would take the second half and run away with it, putting the team on running back Cameron Mayberry's back. Mayberry rushed 31 times for 312 yards and three touchdowns. He would also add 70 yards on three kick returns, bringing his all-purpose yards to 382 yards.
Â
Defensively,
Garrett Jackson led the Grizzlies with 13 tackles, a dozen of which were solo. He was joined by
Isaia Rosten with 11 total tackles and a forced fumble.
