ALAMOSA – The Adams State University men's basketball team finished out their 2017 season with a win tonight versus Chadron State College. In a close finish and a last minute jumper, the Grizzlies defeated the Eagles with a final score of 75-74.
To start the game, the Grizzlies and Eagles went point-for-point in most of the first half. It was not until the final minute and a half that Chadron broke the 31-31 tie and would end the half on a six point run. Coming out of the half, the Grizzlies trailed 37-31; despite this deficit, the men refused to give up.
Chadron continued their impressive scoring ways quickly out of the half, commanding their largest lead of 42-33 with 17:50 minutes on the clock. It was not until senior
Shane Johnson collected a pair of layups and a three pointer that would put the Grizzlies back in the game. With a little under two minutes left, the Grizzlies continued to trail 74-70. Again, Johnson tallied two layups and a free throw to cut the Eagles lead to one. After a few missed shots and rebounds,
Jarrett Givens nailed a clutch jumper inside the paint with only 8 seconds left to play. A final block by Jackson would seal the win along with the weekend sweep.
Similar to last nights match-up,
Shane Johnson led all scorers with 22 points and added on five assists.
Brandon Sly also had an impressive night on offense, tallying 12 points and a notable eight assists. Finally,
Jarrett Givens and Frederick Jackson added 11 and 10 points, respectively. They also recorded a combined four blocks to keep Chadron from scoring on the other end of the court.
With the final win of the 2017 season, the Grizzlies improve their overall record to 7-7 and RMAC record to 5-3. Their next match-up will take place on January 5, 2018 against the Mountain Lions of University of Colorado – Colorado Springs at 7:30 PM in Plachy Hall.
