ALAMOSA, Colo. (February 10, 2017) – With a stop on the final possession, Adams State University held on for a 70-67 win against Colorado Mesa University on Friday night from Plachy Hall.
The win avenged an earlier loss to the Mavericks this season in which Adams State lost control of a 16-point lead; ultimately losing 91-82.
On Friday night in Alamosa, the Grizzlies started strong and carried a first half lead from start to finish. With a
Brandon Pasker layup with 3:36 left before halftime, the Grizzlies owned a 16-point lead of 37-21. Meanwhile, the ASU defense limited the Mavericks to a 33.3 percent shooting clip in the opening stanza. The well-rounded start sent Adams State into halftime up 39-30.
The Mavericks fought back after the break just as they did in their December comeback win. ASU's nine-point halftime lead dwindled as CMU tied the game at 58-58 with 8:14 left to play. The Mavericks then took a 61-58 lead as the Grizzly offense struggled to gain traction.
Back-to-back three-pointers by
Brandon Sly and
Bryan Umoru pushed ASU back on top, 64-61, but CMU quickly reclaimed a 65-64 edge with a three of their own. However, a
J.R. Tailey jumper on the next possession put ASU on top for what would be the remainder of the game.
After a timeout with 11 seconds left, CMU had an opportunity to tie as the Mavericks only trailed 70-67. The Grizzlies survived as a pair of three-point attempts fell short to prevent overtime.
Sly led ASU's efforts with 19 points off 4-of-6 shooting from three. Sly added 8 rebounds and 5 assists.
Shane Johnson came off the bench for 14 points in 16 minutes. Tailey posted a game-high 10 rebounds along with 6 points.
Adams State hosts Western State Colorado University tomorrow at 7:30pm.
