PUEBLO, Colo. (February 19, 2017) – A three hit, four RBI day from
Evan Weidner, paired with
Josh Keaton's nine strikeouts in six innings on the mound, led Adams State University to a 9-2 Sunday win over Colorado State University-Pueblo.
In the win, the Grizzlies (4-7) produced a single-game high 15 hits and scored in all but two frames of the seven inning game.
Weidner's big day began with a RBI single in the first to score
Dustin Kachel and place ASU with an early 1-0 lead.
In Adams State's three-run second inning, back-to-back sacrifice bunts helped load the bases for
Patrick Huffaker who was able to draw a walk and give the Grizzlies a 2-0 advantage. After a CSU-Pueblo (4-6) pitching change runs continued with a RBI sacrifice fly by Kachel and a RBI single from Weidner.
The lead grew to 6-0 in the top of the third as a
Nick Hill RBI single up the middle scored
Marco Garmendia with a wild pitch later brining Hill in to score. A leadoff single to center in the fourth eventually landed
Michael Downs on third. Downs advanced 90 feet from home plate by stealing second then advancing to third on a fly out.
Thomaslee Mares brought Downs in to score with a RBI single to place ASU ahead, 7-0.
A Weidner two RBI double down the right field line an inning later brought an end to Adams State's run production. Weidner's base-clearing hit scored Downs and Huffaker.
The lead remained safe as Keaton worked through the ThunderWolves' lineup. After allowing a leadoff single in the first, Keaton cruised through the next three frames. In the second, third, and fourth Keaton faced the minimum nine batters with five strikeouts. Keaton's only blemishes came in the fifth and sixth as CSU-Pueblo notched two runs. However, the pitcher worked out of a jam in the sixth with a strikeout and double play after allowing three consecutive singles to begin the inning.
Mason Munford entered the game in the seventh to complete the game with a groundout, line out, and strike out.
In the win, Weidner went 3-of-5 with four RBI as Downs, Mares, Garmendia, and
Dylan April each picked up two hits.
Keaton's (2-1) day concluded with nine strikeouts in six innings. The senior did not give up a walk and allowed two runs off six hits.
