PUEBLO, Colo. (February 3rd, 2017) --- The Grizzlies headed to Pueblo tonight hoping to give No. 3 CSU-Pueblo (22-0) their first loss of the season. Despite a competitive effort in the first half, the ThunderWolves pulled away in the third period for a 70-42 win.
Â
With an upset in mind, Adams State (1-18) matched nearly everything the home team threw at them in the first. After CSUP opened the game with a three,
Karleigh Cooley answered with a three of her own. Later in the period,
Cydney McHenry hit a three to make it a one point game and forced a ThunderWolves timeout. The Grizzlies found themselves down only 13-11 to the No. 3 team in the land after one quarter of play. The second would also be a tightly contested one with Pueblo growing their lead by only a small margin. The halftime score of 31-22 still meant hope was in reach for Adams State. The Grizzlies went 4-9 from three at the half.
Cydney McHenry led Adams with 8 points.
Â
The game took a turn in the third period in favor of the home team. The ThunderWolves outscored the Grizzlies 23-7 to head into the final period up by 25. Though the fourth was a close 16-13 contest, the third period scars were too much to overcome as CSU-Pueblo won the contest 70-42.
Â
The Grizzlies racked up 13 steals defensively to go along with 5 blocks.
Nicole Broyles-Mortensen came up big with 6 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals on the night.
Lejla Hadzialijagic and Maddy Merschel had 2 blocks each as well. The ThunderWolves were led by Tuileisu Anderson with 24 points, and Molly Rohrer with 8 blocks.
Â
The team continues action tomorrow in Las Vegas, New Mexico as they take on the New Mexico Highlands (2-17) at 5:00pm. Â
