ALAMOSA, Colo (February 9th, 2017) --- The Adams State wrestling team hosted their final duel tonight against No. 13 CSU-Pueblo. Fresh off of a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference title, the ThunderWolves seemed anything but fatigued as they went on to win 35-6 over ASU.
Colorado State Pueblo was crowned RMAC champions only six days ago and came into the night ranked No. 13 nationally.
The night started at 141 pounds. Jared Mestas was able to gain a 20-2 tech fall victory over
Dylan Udero to give the visitors an early lead. At 149, Vasquez was leading big and appeared to have everything under control before being flipped into a pinfall by Clay Archer.
Gavin Davy was then pinned by Kyle Fantin late in the 159 pound match to push CSUP to a 17-0 lead. Next, JaCobi Jones scored a 14-11 decision at the buzzer to defeat
Isaac Lopez and Kyle Bateman won his decision over
Koery Windham to clear the 165 and 174 weight classes.
Facing a 23-0 deficit, Adams State's
Nevada Bencomo pinned Phil Young at the 2:44 to get ASU onto the scoreboard. Unfortunately, that is as much as the Grizzlies could muster on the night as the Pack narrowly edged out
Khalil Gipson,
Tuli Laulu,
Darek Huff, and
Martin Ramirez. None of the remaining matches were decided by more than four points.
The Grizzlies conclude their season tomorrow at Western State. The contest will begin at 7:00pm.
