ALAMOSA (April 13, 2017) – It was pitcher
Josh Keaton's night as the senior struck out 13 batters during a complete game 8-0 shutout win for Adams State University on Thursday evening against Colorado School of Mines.
The senior fell a strikeout short of tying his single-game school record set during a seven-inning 5-3 win at Regis University on 5/2/16. In 9.0 innings on the mound, Keaton (3-5) totaled 115 net pitches with 13 strikeouts, seven hits, and two walks. Keaton now owns a team-high 73 strikeouts on the season.
It marked the Grizzlies' (11-24, 5-16 RMAC) second shutout win of the season with the first coming on Feb. 3
rd against Arizona Christian (W, 1-0).
With Keaton controlling the Orediggers (17-17, 9-11 RMAC), the Adams State offense provided a run in the first off the bat of
Evan Weidner who notched a RBI single to score
Erik Hildebrandt. Five additional runs came in the sixth inning. The frame started strong with four consecutive hits: a
Michael Downs single, a Weidner RBI double, a
Marco Garmendia RBI triple, and a
Dustin Kachel RBI single. After a Colorado Mines pitching change the Grizzlies added their final runs of the inning thanks to a two RBI single from
Grant Templin.
The Grizzlies padded the lead later as Garmendia connected for a RBI single in the seventh followed by a Templin RBI single in the eighth.
With the offense providing plenty of runs, Keaton kept the Oredigger bats silent while receiving plenty of help from the defense as ASU recorded a single-game high three double plays in the conference win.
Weidner and Garmendia each finished 3-for-5 at the plate. Weidner added two runs scored, two RBI, and a stolen base as Garmendia was responsible for two RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base. Templin finished 2-for-4 with a game-high three RBI. Hildebrandt and Downs tacked on two hits apiece.
The Grizzlies return to the diamond on Friday at 6pm against the Orediggers.
