ALAMOSA, Colo. (April 21, 2017) – Senior pitcher
Josh Keaton tossed his second consecutive complete game but it came in defeat as Adams State University fell to No. 23 Colorado Mesa University, 4-0.
In 9.0 innings, Keaton (4-6) struck out nine batters with 14 ground outs off a career-high 156 net pitches. The Mavericks (31-8, 23-2 RMAC) scored a run in each of the first three innings and another in the seventh but Keaton kept the damage to a minimum throughout the day. Unfortunately Keaton's outing was bested by CMU starter Kyle Leahy (9-0) who pitched a complete game shutout off 102 net pitches. Leahy frustrated the ASU offense to the tune of six hits and no runs allowed.
With Leahy on the mound, the Grizzlies (11-28, 5-20 RMAC) placed their first runner in scoring position during the third as
Erik Hildebrandt stole second after reaching base with a single. Hildebrandt would not advance as a ground out by
Michael Downs ended the frame. Adams State threatened in the ninth with a pair of two out singles from Downs and
Evan Weidner, however, ASU was held scoreless as a
Marco Garmendia foul out ended the game.
In total, Leahy produced five 1-2-3 innings during the nine inning game lasting a mere two hours and five minutes.
Hildebrandt and Weidner paced ASU with two hits apiece as Downs and
Grant Templin each picked up a hit in the conference tilt.
The four-game series resumes tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at 12pm from the ASU Baseball Field.
