BB | Grizzlies Fall Twice To No. 23 Mavericks

The fourth, and final, game of the series is set for a 12pm first pitch on Sunday at the ASU Baseball Field

ALAMOSA, Colo. (April 22, 2017) – Adams State University dropped both games of a Saturday doubleheader against No. 23 Colorado Mesa University.

The Grizzlies (11-30, 5-22 RMAC) were defeated 10-1 in game one followed by an 8-1 setback in game two against the Mavericks (33-8, 25-2 RMAC). The fourth, and final, game of the series is set for a 12pm first pitch on Sunday at the ASU Baseball Field.

Game One (L, 10-1)
Dylan April collected a team-high two hits but ASU was unable to produce much offensively in their game one defeat. With Daniel Brennan (1-7) earning the start, CMU notched a three-run second inning and a five-run fourth to create separation from Adams State. The Grizzlies produced their lone run in the second as a Nick Hill RBI double brought in Grant Templin who began the inning with a single up the middle.

Adams State placed a runner in scoring position during the first, second, and sixth inning but were unable to open the floodgates to mount a comeback. Evan Weidner and Marco Garmendia began the sixth with back-to-back singles as both advanced into scoring position after a ground out. However, a pair of pop up outs that followed brought the frame to a close without a run.

Brennan tossed 3.1 innings in a losing effort with eight runs allowed off 10 hits. Adam Molina and Dalton Carleo each made a relief appearance as the duo combined to allow just two runs off five hits in 3.2 innings.

CMU's Chris Ramirez (6-1) picked up the win in 5.0 innings with one run allowed off five hits. Trevin Reynolds took to the mound for the last two frames, giving up just two hits. The Mavericks posted three home runs with two coming from Keenan Eaton and one from Bligh Madris.

Game Two (L, 8-1)
Pitching continued to frustrate ASU in Saturday's finale as Colorado Mesa pitcher JR McDermott (6-0) allowed one run off three hits in 5.0 innings of work. McDermott added eight strikeouts as relievers Jett Wodiuk and Tyler Day each notched an inning of relief work and did not allow an ASU hit.

Brett Aker (0-1) earned the starting nod but picked up the loss with seven runs allowed off 10 hits in 3.1 innings. After Aker's exit, reliever Dylan Sherry kept the CMU offense in check with one run, two hits, and four strikeouts in 3.2 innings.

In defeat, Adams State produced three hits: a Michael Downs single and a Tony Stanich RBI double in the fourth and a Ryne Niemi single in the fifth.

Before Stanich's RBI knock in the bottom of the fourth, Colorado Mesa posted seven runs in the top half of the inning and added their final run in the fifth.

The four-game series concludes tomorrow at 12pm from the ASU Baseball Field.
