PUEBLO, Colo. (April 9, 2017) – Adams State University dropped their Sunday finale 11-5 as Colorado State University-Pueblo scored eight runs in the last two innings to pull ahead of the Grizzlies (10-26, 4-18 RMAC).
Adams State established an early lead as
Evan Weidner,
Grant Templin, and
Tyler Bybee each connected for a home run. Weidner's homer to right center put ASU on top 1-0 in the first as Templin's homer to left field gave ASU a 2-1 lead in the third. In the fourth, Bybee's solo shot to left center pushed ASU ahead 5-2.
The Grizzlies' biggest inning came in the third as Templin led off the frame with his home run. Four batters later, Weidner's RBI sacrifice fly scored
Nick Hill who reached base after being hit by a pitch. After Weidner's sac fly,
Marco Garmendia belted a RBI triple into left center to score
Erik Hildebrandt who reached base with a single.
The ThunderWolves (16-18, 10-10 RMAC) posted a run in the fifth and took a 6-5 lead with three runs in the seventh. The seventh included a pair of pitching changes for ASU as CSU-Pueblo sent eight batters to the plate resulting in three runs off three hits. The ThunderWolves tacked on five more runs in the eighth to pull away 11-5. Like the seventh inning, the eighth featured a pair of ASU pitching changes as CSU-Pueblo sent 10 batters to the plate.
The Grizzlies were unable to mount a comeback as the offense managed only one hit in the final three innings.
Weidner finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored as Bybee hit 2-for-3 with a RBI and run scored. Hildebrandt and Templin also snagged two hits to collect a multi-hit day.
Casey Weber received the start and threw 4.0 innings with four strikeouts. Weber was responsible for three runs off seven hits.
Daniel Brennan (1-5) picked up the loss as the pitcher of record during CSU-Pueblo's three-run seventh.
Adam Molina,
Ryan Ferguson,
Dylan Sherry,
Mason Munford, and
Chance Ward also spent time on the mound as the Grizzlies utilized a total of seven pitchers on Sunday.
The Grizzlies remain on the road next week for a four-game series with Colorado School of Mines. First pitch of game one is slated for April 13
th at 3pm.
