COLORADO SPRINGS – Adams State University lost its first conference game of the season to the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs on Sunday, 2-1.
Â
The Grizzlies allowed two goals to the Mountain Lions team leader in goals, Jake McAllister, which led to UCCS first win of the season. McAllister got the Mountain Lions on the board in the 13
th minute off of a corner kick and in the 48
th minute for his second score of the game.
Â
Adams State would cut the lead to one after a
Drayden Ricks missile from way out for his second goal of the season in the 54
th minute. The Grizzlies were shut out for the rest of the game despite having seven shots on goal.
Â
Adams looked to have tied the game with two minutes remaining, putting the ball in the back of the net. Unfortunately the play was called offside.
"Disappointing result today at Springs," said head coach
Brett Bentley. "For stretches of the game we took them out of what they wanted to do. Unfortunately this was a tough learning lesson for us. We weren't ready to go at the start of each half and we paid for it. We have to be more clinical in our finishing because we had more than enough chances to win today."
Â
The game was filled with bumps and bruises as both teams combined for twenty penalties and three yellow cards. Â Â
Â
Adams State will come back home for a tough test against the No.4-ranked Colorado Mesa Mavericks. The Grizzlies will look to bounce back from a 0-2 loss last year to the defending RMAC champions. The game will start at noon this Friday on the ASU Soccer Field.
