CHADRON, Neb. – For the first time this season, Adams State University football team ended up on the other end of a high-scoring first half against Chadron State College. The Eagles jumped out to a hot first half, finishing off with the most points ever scored against the Grizzlies in school history with a 73-26 victory. Adams hopes to erase this from the minds of its players quickly, as the team hosts South Dakota School of Mines Saturday for the 2017 Hall of Fame Game.
Â
The Eagles could not be stopped during the team's homecoming. Chadron scored on 11 of 13 drives during the game, with 10 of those finishing in the end zone. The other two drives ended in punts, one which was dropped for an Adams State safety. It wasn't just the offense scoring, as Stevann Brown had a 95-yard kick return for a touchdown and a 15-yard punt return off of a blocked punt for a touchdown.
Â
The wet conditions weren't helping the Grizzlies, but the Eagles defense took the run game out for Adams. The Grizzly backs had 25 rushes for 75 yards, but quarterback
Nick Rooney finished with eight rushes for 34 yards and a loss of 42 yards. Additional fumbled snaps brought the total Grizzly run game stats to 36 carries for 34 total yards.
Â
Despite the lack of time in the pocket and wet conditions, Rooney still finished the game 28-54 for 328 yards and three touchdowns. He was sacked five times and hurried an additional five times.
Â
On the receiving end of the ball,
Chad Hovasse caught eight passes for 136 yards and a touchdown.
Marquese Surrell also saw a good amount of the ball, as he caught six balls for 71 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Â
Defensively,
Garrett Jackson led the Grizzlies once again with 10 tackles, seven solo. He also had a tackle for loss and a quarterback hurry.
Isaia Rosten also had 10 tackles, including a tackle for loss.
