Pueblo, Colorado - The Adams State University wrestling team (0-7) took the No. 7 ranked Colorado State-Pueblo ThunderWolves to the limit tonight but fell as short as anyone can in a 21-22 loss. A huge crowd is expected however tomorrow evening in the team's first home contest.
Â
The 2017-18 team has threatened many top teams this season but has come out on the wrong side of all of them. Perhaps none of those nail-biters stung more than falling one point short of matching the number seven ranked team in the entire country.
Â
At 125,
Darek Huff handled Josiah Seaton in a 9-2 decision for a quick three point lead.
Luis Gurule edged out a 5-4 decision over #6 Paul Garcia at 133 pounds for another three team points to give the Grizzlies a 6-0 lead early. The ThunderWolves would answer strong with two pinfalls at 141 pounds and 149 pounds. The latter was the most surprising as
Natrelle Demison lost his fifth bout of the year to Jared Mestas in a 6:03 pin.
Â
Now up 12-6, CSUP would add a major decision when Kyle Fantin defeated
Joshua Salas 11-2 at 157 pounds for another four points.
Koery Windham got the Grizzlies back on track with a clutch 1-0 decision over Gavin Melendez at 165 pounds. At 174,
Isaac Lopez would be pinned by Preston Lauterbach in 6:50 to give Pueblo the 22-9 advantage. Adams State would win the remainder of the matchups with the Bencomo brothers gaining nine points off tech fall and a major decision wins at 184 and 197 pounds.
Â
Now down 18-22, the Grizzlies had one last chance at heavyweight. Senior,
Tuli Laulu did pick up the victory, but only via 5-3 decision over Cody Johnson which only resulted in three team points and saw the underdogs fall one point short.
Â
Despite it all, ASU is expecting an energetic crowd for the Grizzly's first home contest of the season against New Mexico Highlands tomorrow night at 6:00PM in Plachy Hall. There is little information on the visitors for tomorrow available. The contest appears to be the first team matchup for the Cowboys this year. Â Â Â
