WREST | Adams to compete in 28th annual Tracy Borah Duals

ALAMOSA - Adams State University wrestling squad will take the first step forward in the new year, moving away from tournament action and into dual competition in the 28th annual Tracy Borah Duals, hosted by Western State Colorado University. The normal duals will run Saturday, while the Mountaineers have added a Western Colorado Open that will run Friday evening for unattached athletes and non-starters.

The Grizzlies have been banged up and busy, having competed in five different tournaments the first half of the season. The team will compete in their first dual against Canada-based NCAA team, No. 11 - ranked Simon Fraser at 10:30 a.m. They will then be taking on the No.16-ranked University of Findlay at 1 p.m.

Only one Grizzly has competed recently, that being Darek Huff in the Midwestern Championships last weekend. The senior went 1-2 against division I opponents. Besides that, the majority of the team has been resting.

Huff will start at the 125-pound class for the Grizzlies, while the 133 weight class is undetermined. Dylan Udero will face off in the 141-pound class, while the 149-pound class will either be Natrelle Demison or Josh Salas. These first four weight classes will not face any ranked opponents.

The next six weight classes all have top-12 ranked individuals that Grizzlies could face. Isaac Lopez at 157-pound will kick things off against Findlay's James Wilmer, the No. 11 - ranked wrestler. The 174-pound is undetermined, but will face the No.10 - ranked wrestler from Findlay. At 184, Nevada Bencomo will face Brad Metz of Findlay, the No.7 - ranked individual. His brother Dakota Bencomo could take on the No.2 - ranked Morgan Smith of Simon Fraser. Finally, Tuli Laulu could face No. 9 - ranked Mimmo Lytle of Findlay.

All nine of these Adams wrestlers have it tough, but none have it tougher than Koery Windham at the 165-pound class. Windham has the potential to face the top-ranked wrestler from Simon Fraser, Tyler McLean. He could also face No. 6 - ranked Alonzo Turner from Findlay.

Adams State continues on a long road trip against No. 21 - ranked Fort Hays State next week, followed by No. 15 - ranked Lindenwood, No. 6 - ranked Central Oklahoma, and Newman University in the Kearney Duals. They finish up the forever road trip against No. 7 - ranked CSU-Pueblo on the road before hosting New Mexico Highlands on January 18th.
