FB | Grizzlies Win Streak Halted at Four in Loss to 'Rockers

RAPID CITY, S.D. - The Adams State University Football team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end Saturday afternoon in a 56-42 loss to South Dakota School of Mines. With the loss, the Grizzlies record now stands at 4-3 on the year.

The Grizzlies had a spark early on defense in the first quarter. On the 'Rockers (4-3, 3-3 RMAC) opening drive, quarterback Jake Sullivan looked to the end zone on a 22 yard pass, but defensive back Deon Mayers went stride for stride with his receiver and pulled in the interception.

The offense tried to reward Mayers interception on their first drive, but South Dakota Mines forced a quick three-and-out. The 'Rockers then capped off a 12 play, 80 yard drive with a four yard touchdown run to grab a early 7-0 lead.

The Grizzlies found their offensive rhythm on their next drive. Nick Rooney and the Adams State offense drove 70 yards in eight plays. Playing against mother nature and the 'Rockers defense the Grizzlies drive took 3:20 to tie the game. Tyree Harris ended the drive with a one-yard dive to tie the game at 7-all.

The 'Rockers wasted little time retaking the lead, as Connor Silveria took a handoff 79 yards to the end zone on the very first play. Following the PAT, South Dakota Mines was back in front 14-7.  The Grizzlies quickly tied the game at 14-all when Rooney found Miles Fishback on a quick pass. With the ball in hand, Fishback managed to shake a few defenders and tiptoed down the sideline for a 52 yard touchdown reception.

With 2:00 left in the opening frame, the 'Rockers managed to get one more score in. Needing just 1:17 and four plays, South Dakota Mines retook the lead, 20-14. Silveria found the end zone for a second time with an 11 yard run. The 'Rockers botched the extra point and it was just a six point lead after one quarter of play.

The Grizzlies capitalized on the missed PAT by the 'Rockers to grab their first lead of the game at 21-20. With a drive that started near the end of the 1st quarter and great field position thanks to a kickoff return from Keyon Thomas, Adams State seized the opportunity. Rooney led the offense 49 yards in just four plays and capped it off with a one yard fade route to Chad Hovasse in the left end zone.

The 'Rockers slowed things down a bit on their next possession eating up exactly 2:00 minutes off the clock. Sullivan found the end zone for the first time on a 21 yard scramble to close out a six play, 75 yard drive. Following a successful two-point conversion, Adams State trailed by seven, 28-21, with 12:27 left in the first half.

Defense picked up as did the harsh weather. Snowfall and strong winds picked up but both teams picked scored one more time each before going into the break. The 'Rockers managed to pick off the Grizzlies on one possession but it did not result in anything as Adams State defense forced a turnover on downs.

The Grizzlies next scoring drive ate up a majority of clock time as they used up 6:08 and went 80 yards in 14 plays. Rooney threw touchdown pass No. 3 and his second to Hovasse with a 14 yard strike. With 1:55 to play in the half, it seemed the game was going to be tied going into halftime but the 'Rockers managed one more touchdown to lead 35-28.. Sullivan rushed for his second touchdown on a three-yard scamper to the end zone.

The Grizzlies got the ball to start the second half and technically scored on their second possession of the half. On a fourth and four play, Rooney was picked off for a second time, but the defender immediately fumbled the ball and Fishback was there for the recovery. With a new set of downs, Adams State capitalized two plays later with Rooney finding Hovasse from 18 yards out for the score. The game was tied yet again 35-all.

South Dakota Mines jumped back out in front on it next possession. Trying to burn time off the clock, the 'Rockers used 3:06 to go 64 yards in eight plays. Sullivan capped the drive off with a nine yard keeper for his third rushing touchdown of the afternoon. The 'Rockers led 42-35 and never let the Grizzlies tie again.

After forcing a punt on the Grizzlies next offensive series, the 'Rockers found the end zone on a time consuming drive that burned 5:32 off the clock with 11 plays for 63 yards. Sullivan threw his first touchdown pass of the day with a 17 yard strike to Isaiah Manley to give South Dakota Mines a 49-35 advantage.

The 'Rockers once again put together a long drive that spanned 5:07. Starting toward the end of the third, South Dakota Mines used 12 plays to clear 65 yards. Sullivan threw his second touchdown as he found Ira Murphey on a five yard hit and the 'Rockers built a 21 point lead, 56-35.
