Trailblazers Down Grizzlies 3-1 in St. George

ST. GEORGE, Utah - The Adams State Men's Soccer ended its eight games scoreless streak Sunday afternoon with a goal against Dixie State University but three first half goals by the Trailblazers kept the Grizzlies from earning their first win of the year. Adams State fell 3-1 and now stands at 0-14-2 on the year with a 0-10-2 mark in RMAC play.

The Trailblazers were in command for the entire first period scoring three goals while holding the Grizzlies to without a shot in that span. The first goal for Dixie State came at 16:06 mark when Ricky Nunez played a 40 yard pass into the center box and found the back left corner of the net on header shot. Dominic Damato was credited the assist thanks in part to his free kick off a foul from Adams State.

Despite not getting a shot off in the first period, the Grizzlies continued their theme of strong defense for much of the first frame. After getting down 1-0 earl, Adams State held the Trailblazers with a goal for the next 18 minutes. Dixie State had opportunities with continued offensive pressure but Jacob Faircloth notched five saves in teh first 45 minutes of action.

The Grizzlies defense battled in the first period but the offensive pressure by Dixie State paid off in the 35th minute. Damato pushed the Trailblazers lead to 2-0 with a shot from the left hash mark of the field thanks in part to a pass from Gustavo Ortega. Nunez posted his second goal of the day and the Trailblazers final goal of the match with a penalty kick goal in the 41st minute.

Coming out of the halftime break, the Grizzlies and Trailblazers traded shots on offense. Adams State found the back of the net in the 55th minute when Benji Rogers intercepted the Trailblazers clearing attempt. Rogers made his effort count with a finishing shot from 20 yards to the right corner of the net.

The Grizzlies finished the afternoon with seven total shots, with four coming on goal. Rogers led the offensive charge with three shots overall while scoring his second goal of the season. In net, Faircloth posted 10 saves in 90 minutes of action.

The Grizzlies will close out the road portion of their schedule next Thursday, Oct. 25, at Colorado State-Pueblo before return home for their regular season finale on Saturday, Oct. 27. Adams State's match at CSU-Pueblo is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
