SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Adams State University Football team had a tough Saturday afternoon on the road as they fell 59-20 to the Angelo State University Rams. This was the Grizzlies only non-conference game as their record dropped to 4-5 overall record.
A scoreless first half by Adams State combined with 45 points by the Rams (5-4, 3-3 LSC) ultimately kept the game from ever being close. Despite the loss, the Grizzlies did have some record breaking performances from their receiving corps.
Wide receivers
Marquese Surrell and
Chad Hovasse both set school records in Saturday's contest as they both continued high-level play in their senior campaigns.
Surrell set the single-game record Adams State in receptions with 18. His 18 catches surpasses the mark of 15, which was held by Hovasse. Surrell's 18 receptions totaled 128 yards on the day.
Hovasse became the single-season record holder in receptions as his 15 catches brought his season total to 94. The previous mark was 88 set by Chris Perry during the 1995 season. For the afternoon, he racked up 158 yards and a touchdown.
The afternoon started with Angelo State scoring four first quarter touchdowns and grabbing a commanding 28-0 lead. The Rams scored at the 13:53 mark and the 10:31 mark to get up 14-0. They added the next two touchdowns in the final three minutes of the opening frame to grab a four-possession lead.
Three more Angelo State touchdowns in the second 15 minutes of action gave them a 45-0 lead going into the break. Two of three touchdowns came within 31 seconds of each other. The third Rams touchdown came with just over six minutes left to play in the first half.
Coming out of the break, Angelo State added two more touchdowns in late in the third to open its lead up to 59-0. The Grizzlies ended their scoreless struggle with a touchdown at :59 mark in the third.
Nick Rooney found
Miles Fishback on a 26 yard pass to bring the score to 59-6 going into the fourth quarter.
Fishback scored his second touchdown of the afternoon with 10:34 to play in regulation. Rooney found him again, this time on a nine-yard strike to give the Grizzlies 13 points.
The Grizzlies final touchdown came with 4:02 left to play in regulation. Hovasse brought in the game's final scored when he pulled in a four yard pass from
John Buksa. The Grizzlies third touchdown brought the final score to 59-20.
Rooney finished the day with 355 yards through the air and was 39-of-62 passing. He had two touchdowns but was sacked five times. Hovasse led the receiving corps with 158 yards and a touchdown. Surrell had 128 receiving yards, while Fishback had 80 yards on six receptions and a pair touchdowns.
Defensively,
Garrett Jackson put up 16 total tackles to lead the Grizzlies. He had nine tackles come on a solo effort and one tackle for loss.
Deon Mayers also had double-digit tackles with 10.
Garrett Pemelton added a sack for a loss of yard to help the defense.
The Grizzlies will be back on the gridiron next Saturday, Nov. 3 for their final road game of the season. They will take on Colorado Mesa with kickoff set for 7 p.m. against the Mavericks.
