ALAMOSA, Colo. - The Adams State University Women's Soccer team fell to the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs on Sunday at home, 3-1. The Mountain Lions are currently ranked #24 in the country. The Grizzlies move to 2-9 overall and 1-6 in conference play.
The Grizzlies and Mountain Lions were battling extreme winds and rainy weather during their matchup on Sunday. Both teams started off slow offensively. In the first half, UCCS controlled the ball for the majority of the period. The Mountain Lions outshot the Grizzlies, 11-2, but could not capitalize. Corri Zaiger played fantastic defense racking up six saves in the first half. With the wind going against the Mountain Lions, the offense was still able to push the pace against the Grizzlies defense. The Mountain Lions tallied seven corner kicks but the Grizzlies defense held strong to keep the game tied.
As the weather started to pick up, the Mountain Lions offense found different ways to put shots on goal. Anna Gregg placed a shot where Zaiger could not reach on a free kick in the 56th minute to give the Mountain Lions a one goal lead. The Grizzlies quickly answered with a goal from Breana Flores in the 63rd minute to tie the game at 1-all.
Flores found herself alone with the goalkeeper in a one-on-one situation. After a quick shot from Flores, the Mountain Lion goalkeeper deflected the ball right back at Flores. Flores' second attempt did not miss and found the back of the net. Later in the period, the weather became a factor. Anna Gregg notched her second goal of the game to give the Mountain Lions a 2-1 lead after a deep shot that slipped right through Zaiger's hands. Aleesa Muir sealed the win with another deep shot from 20 yards out.
The Mountain Lions offense proved why they are one of the top offenses in the conference with 35 total shots with 16 being on goal. The Grizzlies could only counter with eight total shots and three on goal. Zaiger tallied 13 saves for the Grizzlies. The Mountain Lion offense also had 16 corner kicks to the Grizzlies one. Kendall Weld and Breana Flores each had two shots for the Grizzlies.
The Grizzlies will travel to Utah this week to face Dixie State University on Friday, Oct. 12 and Westminster College on Sunday, Oct. 14.
