ALAMOSA, Colo. – Adams State Men's Basketball is defeated by No. 4 West Texas A&M on Saturday Nov. 10. The Grizzlies fell 112-87 at their second home game.
The Grizzlies won the tip off and scored the first bucket of the game 17 seconds in, with a layup by
Rickey Norris. The Buffs answered, and from there both teams started with momentum. WTAM led a majority of the first half, but the Grizzlies kept them within a four-point lead the first ten minutes, 27-23.
Davere Creighton,
Shemar Johnson, and
Rickey Norris all kept the Grizzlies in the game draining their free throws. The Grizzlies went on a 15-14 run cutting the Buff lead 41-38.
Justice Augmon hit a big three with only 2:44 left in the first half, tying it up 41-41.
WTAM went on a 17-4 run in the remaining time of the half. Buff, Qua Grant went 3/3 from the three-point line in those last two minutes, helping WTAM regain their lead 58-45 at the end of the first half. In the first half the Grizzlies shot 92.3% from the free throw line. They made 12/13 free throws. WTAM only went 3/7 from the free throw line.
The Buffs came out hungry in the second half, completing an 11-8 run in the first four minutes, making it 69-53. WTAM took off, scoring 24 points in following eight minutes. The Buffs lead 93-67 with 8:02 left on the clock. WTAM had their biggest lead with 4:32 remaining, 106-74.
Adams State closed the gap with layups from
John Dewey, fast breaks from
RJ Brown, and free throws from
Jared Perry and
Justice Augmon. Adams State's leading scorer of the night was
Davere Creighton. Creighton had 21 points with five rebounds.
The Grizzlies had three players with 13 points tonight:
Rickey Norris,
Shemar Johnson, and
Justice Augmon. Norris also led the team with two steals, a block and five rebounds. Accompanying Augmon's 13 points, he had 3 assists, a block, two rebounds, and went 4/4 from the free throw line. Johnson also went 4/4 from the line, with three boards.
John Dewey was a big part of the game today, coming down with seven rebounds, three assists and went 7/7 from the free throw line.
West Texas A&M had two players with 23 points on the night, Qua Grant and Ryan Quaid. Quaid also came down with nine boards. Grant was 6/10 from the three-point line, and had four rebounds.
Adams State will be on the road for the next five games. They will not be back in Plachy Hall until Dec. 1. The Grizzlies will see the court on Tuesday Nov. 13 for an exhibition game in Espanola, New Mexico playing Northern New Mexico College. Tip off will be at 7 p.m.
