LIBERTY, Mo. – Adams State Women's Basketball falls to William Jewell College Sunday, Nov. 11 in Liberty Missouri. The Grizzlies played a hard-fought game, but the Cardinals came out on top 67-52.
Adams State came out in the first quarter with the first two points from free throws by
Brooke Neal. Two minutes in
Stephanie Ruiz hit a three-pointer giving the Grizzlies a 5-1 lead.
The Cardinals went on a 16-0 run the following five minutes. Grizzly,
Zakiya Beckles, broke Adams State's cold streak by hitting a big three with 2:01 left on the clock, cutting the WJC lead 17-8.
After a few more runs up and down the court, Ruiz hit a jumper in the paint with 48 seconds left. The Grizzlies trailed 19-10 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter started off with a jumper from Beckles, bringing Adams State closer, 19-12. A lot of action happened in the paint,
Maddie Dorris grabbed two boards and put in two layups in the first three minutes of the second quarter. WJC had their largest lead of the first half by the end on the second quarter, 36-23.
The Grizzlies scored the first points of the third quarter.
Zakiya Beckles hid another good jumper, putting Adams State behind only 36-25. Cardinals had their largest lead with 8:11 on the clock, leading the Grizzlies by 16.
Stephanie Ruiz and
Marshell Hollins had a few fast break layups that got the Grizzlies back in the game. By the end of the third, Adams State only trailed by nine, 47-38.
Ruiz opened the Grizzlies fourth quarter draining two threes, cutting the Cardinals lead to five, 44-49 with 8:34 remaining in the game.
Marshell Hollins broke up the 13-2 run WJC had made. Hollins made a fast break layup with 3:13 left on the clock. The Grizzlies finished the remainder of the game going on a 6-5 run, falling 67-52.
Stephanie Ruiz was Adams State leading scorer of the game. Ruiz had 22 points, five steals, four rebounds, and one assist. Tied with Ruiz for boards were
Zakiya Beckles and
Maddie Dorris. Beckles also had nine points on the day with one steal and one assist. Dorris put up seven points and one assist along with her four rebounds.
The Grizzlies capitalized on the Cardinal turnovers, making 25 of their points off turnovers. The Grizzlies also had 24 points from the paint and 11 points from fast breaks.
WJC leading scorers were Antoinette Mussorici and Kayla Harrell. Mussorici had 17 points, one assist and two steals. Harrell had 14 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
The Grizzlies will be back on the court Tuesday Nov. 27, in St. Joseph, Missouri. They will take on Missouri Western at 4:30 p.m.
