PUEBLO, Colo. - The Adams State Men's Basketball team fell in a last second game-winner to Wayland Baptist Friday night. The final shot brought the Pioneers over the Grizzlies, 84-80.

The Grizzlies went into halftime trailing the Pioneers, 42-28. The Grizzlies struggled shooting from the field throughout the first half. Adams State shot 29 percent from the field and 18 percent from three. Wayland Baptist shot 46 percent from the field, while shooting over 35 percent from beyond the arc.

Both teams were nearly even in every statistical category in the first half. Adams State finished with 19 first half rebounds to 22 of Wayland Baptist. Both teams maintained possession of the ball pretty well. The Grizzlies forced seven Pioneer turnovers in the first half, while only losing possession five times of their own.

The Grizzlies roared back in the second half, despite trailing by 14 points to start the half. Adams State made a second half comeback against Wayland Baptist. The Grizzlies outscored the Pioneers by 10 in the second half of play, 52-42.

The Grizzlies played much better in the second half. Adams State shot an incredible 60 percent from the field, sinking 20 of 33 shot attempts. The Grizzlies managed to out rebound the Pioneers, 15-9. This led to more Grizzly opportunities to comeback and tie the game.

A free-throw by Rickey Norris tied the game at 80 in the final minute of the game. However, a clutch basket and a foul by Trevonta Robertson put the Pioneers back ahead of the Grizzlies, 84-80. The Grizzlies now trailed by four with just one second remaining inevitably falling to the Pioneers.

Despite coming up short against the Pioneers, Adams State showed great poise and composure in the second half. The Grizzlies showed tremendous fight coming back from a 14 point halftime deficit. The Grizzlies forced nine Wayland Baptist turnovers, while turning it over just twice in the entire 20 minutes of the second half.

Shemar Johnson's team-high 21 points led the the team's comeback in the second half. Johnson sunk an incredible 10 of his 14 shots in the second half. Johnson and John Dewey remained the only Grizzlies to play the entire second half.

Davere Creighton provided a punch off the bench with 13 points and five rebounds for the game. Rickey Norris and John Dewey each finished with 13 points to end the night.

Wayland Baptist finished with three players scoring above 20 points in the game. Trevonta Robertson led the Pioneers with 24 points and five rebounds. J.J. Culver finished with 22 points, while Josh Throns contributed one less shy with 21.

The Grizzlies continue their weekend in the Al Kaly Shrine Classic with a game MSU Texas Saturday at 3 p.m.
