ALAMOSA, Colo. - The Adams State Men's Basketball team tips off their season with a double-header this weekend at home. The Grizzlies begin with a matchup against UT Permian Basin Friday night, followed by a game against No. 4 West Texas A&M on Saturday. Both games are set for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
The Grizzlies are coming off an exhibition game against Colorado College. A late fourth quarter comeback by Adams State pushed them over the Tigers, 87-77.
Szymon Walczak led the Grizzlies in scoring with 18 points. Shemar Johnson contributed 16 points with a team-high 11 rebounds. John Dewey posted an all-around game with 15 points, six boards, six steals, and six assists.
The Grizzlies are coming off a 17-13 campaign from 2017-18. Adams State finished with an impressive 14-8 record in the RMAC last season. Adams State secured homecourt in the opening round of the RMAC Championships where they defeated MSU Denver in a narrow victory. Adams State's playoff run came to an end in a hard fought game against No. 25 Fort Lewis College, 87-74 in the conference semifinals.
Scouting UT Permian Basin
The Falcons are coming off an exhibition game where the team lost to UTEP, 90-63. The Falcons were in it throughout the first half, trailing by just four points. The Falcons' defense let up in the second half, allowing UTEP to post 52 points.
Kyree Elder posted a team-high 20 points and seven boards for the Falcons. Jacob Ledoux was the team's second highest scorer with 12 points along with four boards.
The Falcons finished with a 26-7 record last season. The Falcons' season came to an end against West Texas A&M in the championship game of the South Central Region Championship.
Scouting No. 4 West Texas A&M
The No. 4 ranked Buffs are coming off the D2CCA Classic this past weekend. The team went undefeated with three consecutive wins over Drury University, Lindenwood, and Concordia University.
The Buffs had four players score over 30 points this past weekend. Ryan Quaid led all scorers with 36 points and 28 rebounds. Qua Grant wasn't far behind with 35 points. Joel Murray and Gach Gach each put up 30 points in the Classic. Brandon Hall was the team-leader in assists with 10 dimes.
The Buffs finished last season with a 32-4 record. Their season came to an end with a loss in the Final Four of the NCAA Division II National Championships against Ferris State.
