LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Adams State University wrestling team (2-10) had somewhat of a surprising day one at the NCAA Western Regional Tournament. One Grizzly has secured a spot in the NCAA Championship Tournament while five others still have a chance to qualify for nationals tomorrow.
Koery Windham entered the day with an 11-14 record at 165 pounds and was not projected to advance all the way to the finals of the entire western region, but that is just what he did. A 5-2 decision over Allen Michel (New Mexico Highlands) advanced him past the first round. Windham then did the unthinkable by beating the nation's number two ranked wrestler, Tyler McLean (Simon Frazer) via 10-3 decision. He then pinned the nation's number four ranked wrestler Christian Smith (California Baptist) at 4:47 to advance to the finals tomorrow against Tyler Mann (Ouachita Baptist). A top two finish clinches a spot in the NCAA Championship Tournament next month.
Darek Huff will compete for third or fourth tomorrow at the 125 pound weight class. Huff captured third last season to qualify. Joining him in a shot at the next round is
Dylan Udero at 141,
Natrelle Demison at 149,
Isaac Lopez at 174, and
Dakota Bencomo at 184.
