ALAMOSA – The No. 21 ranked Adams State University wrestling team (2-9) were plagued by injury tonight in Plachy Hall. Facing the No. 15 ranked Mountaineers of Western State (11-4) did not help that cause either. The Grizzlies were outmatched 15-30 in the end.
Even without injuries at the 125 and 133 pound weight classes, Western is one of the best teams around.
Tuli Laulu did get the Grizzlies off to a hot start with a sudden victory over Samuel DeSeriere at heavyweight. From there, ASU was forced to forfeit the next two matches due to the aforementioned injuries. Jody Sandoval II furthered the sting of the Grizzlies dropping 12 team points with a crushing 7-6 decision over
Dylan Udero.
No. 5
Natrelle Demison then got the crowd back into it with a fall on Diego Calderon at 149 pounds. This was Demison's sixth pin of the season. Shawn Beiriger took a major decision over Josh Salas at 157 before Korey Windham bounced back with a 9-5 decision on Michael Thelen at 165.
The final three matches featured the No. 5 ranked wrestlers at 174 and 197 pounds for the visitors. The Mountaineers lived up to the expectations with Brandon Supernaw gaining a 19-4 tech fall on
Isaac Lopez at 174 and Konnor Schmidt pinning
Nevada Bencomo in a fourth period to avenge a pin Bencomo handed him in the RMAC Tournament last weekend.
Dakota Bencomo did slip a 9-5 decision in at 184 over
Brendan Gonzales to pick up his 10
th win of the year.
Next up will be a home matchup against Colorado Mesa on Saturday at Noon.
