SB | Grizzlies Take First Two against Cowgirls on Saturday

ALAMOSA – The Adams State University softball team took the first two games against New Mexico Highlands University Saturday on the ASU Softball Field.
 
The Grizzlies took the early lead in game one and never looked back, shutting out the Cowgirls in a 9-0 victory. Adams State put the game away in the bottom of the sixth with five runs scored, increasing its lead from four to nine. The inning featured two hits, two errors, and a couple batters hit-by-pitches resulting in a game stoppage due to a mercy rule. The Grizzlies combined for nine hits with eight RBIs for the game.
 
Tyler Hays went two-for-four with three RBIs and two runs scored. She earned her fourth triple and seventh homerun of the season. April Riggins went a perfect three-for-three with two singles and her second triple of the season.
 
Game two began with Highlands taking an early two run lead in the first inning. A solo-homerun by Sarah Hansen gave Adams State its first run in the bottom of the second. The Grizzlies put up four runs in the bottom of the third with the help of a Brittany Phillips bomb. The game got intense in the sixth inning as the teams combined for seven hits, two errors, and nine runs leading to a 9-9 tie.
 
Hays put the game away with a walk-off homerun in the bottom of the eighth inning. This was the second week in a row where she hit a walk-off homerun for Adams State. The Grizzlies came out victorious despite having six errors and giving up six runs in the top of the sixth.  
 
Kacee Schroeder and Whitney Fields combined for nine strikeouts, while earning their second and sixth victories for season. Schroeder gave up just four hits and three walks in game one shutting out New Mexico Highlands. Fields displayed poise having to reenter the game to seal the victory for the Grizzlies.
 
Adams State continues its series against New Mexico Highlands tomorrow at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on the ASU Softball Field.
