ALAMOSA - The Adams State University baseball team (1-25, 1-11 RMAC) had several opportunities to steal a game from Metropolitan State University of Denver (14-15, 10-6 RMAC) but could not hold on. The Grizzlies lost all four games with the final two coming off a combined three run difference.
Â
Game one was a back and forth contest that saw the Grizzlies in control for the better part of six innings. A
Nico Nintze double, a
Dakota Solis single, and a
Ryne Niemi sac-fly gave ASU a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the second. The seventh inning was disastrous however five runs to pull away 13-8 and eventually secure the 16-10 win.
Â
The first game of Saturday's double header was harsh for the home fans. The Grizzlies only had four hits in the contest compared to the Roadrunners' 11. Orlando Romero singled through the right side allowing
Tony Stanich and
Dustin Kachel to score in the sixth for the game's lone scoring highlight in the 2-13 loss. Game two was a thriller however that would slip away in the final moments. Adams held a solid 6-3 lead heading into the top of the sixth. From there, the Roadrunners' Dylan Nelson blasted one out of the park for a three run homer to tie things up. ASU would answer in the bottom half off a
Ryne Niemi single to regain the lead 7-6. Metro would double in the final inning to take the advantage back and the Grizzlies could not answer, losing 7-8.
Â
Today's matchup could have gone to either team and ultimately came down to the bottom of the ninth inning. Adams had an early 3-1 lead but it was quickly erased off a seven run surge by Metro. The teams eventually found themselves in an 11-11 tie heading into the ninth. In the top half, MSUD scored three RBI's off a Trent Maloney homerun leaving ASU down by three.
Tyson Zanski would hit a homerun of his own in the bottom half, but that would be all as the Grizzlies fell 12-14.
Â
Erik Hildebrandt had a fantastic series racking up seven RBI's, 10 hits, and six runs scored.
Ryne Niemi,
Dustin Kachel, and
Tyson Zanski combined for 17 RBI's, 13 hits, and eight runs. Nine of those RBI's came from Niemi alone. Â Â Â
Â
The Grizzlies will now take to the road for a series with Colorado Christian beginning next Friday at 3:00PM Â Â Â Â Â Â
