GOLDEN, Colo. – Adams State University softball team split the first doubleheader of the series with Colorado School of Mines, losing game one 4-3 on a walkoff while taking game two by a score of 7-6. The two teams square off against tomorrow.
Mines opened up the series scoring two unearned runs in the first inning to take the early lead. The Grizzlies cut into the lead with another unearned run in the fourth, but let up a run in the sixth. That's when things got exciting.
The Grizzlies led off the top of the seventh with a walk, then
Tyler Hays flied out. Riggins stepped to the plate and was hit by a pitch, putting the tying run on first. A strikeout would come next, putting the pressure on with two outs. One wild pitch during
Hannah Wirtjes at bat moved the runners into scoring position, then with a 2-2 count she hit a single down the right field line to tie the game up.
The bottom of the seventh saw two consecutive bunts bringing the winning run to second. In the third at bat the Orediggers smacked a double to right center, winning the game.
The next game was kicked off with
Tyler Hays smacking a homerun to left center. The Orediggers responded with a two-run in the bottom of first to retake the lead. The Grizzlies would retake the lead in the fourth by way of a Riggins single and an impressive 12 pitch at bat for Angel Micciulli that started with a pair of strikes and ended with her earning and RBI walk. Riggins would add another RBI to her count in the fifth and Brittany Phillips broke the final tie in the sixth with a three-run homerun down the left line.
With the lead in hand, the Grizzlies entered the bottom of the seventh looking to smack deja-vu out of the park. A walk and a fly out kicked off the half of the inning, followed by a single and a double that scored two and left the game tying run in scoring position. A pitching change gave Madison Vrabel a save attempt, which she needed only five pitches to earn. The first at bat hit the ball fouled out to first. With the final at bat coming, a foul and three balls led to a simple groundout to Hays to end the game.
Wirtjes led game one hitting three-of-four with a pair of RBIs. Phillips led game two with a pair of hits and three RBIs.
