ALAMOSA. - The Adams State University baseball team (1-37, 1-23 RMAC) were soundly defeated in all four games this weekend by No. 23 ranked Colorado School of Mines (26-8, 19-5 RMAC). Though there were moments of hope in the series, the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's first place team prevailed in the end.
Â
The Grizzlies began Friday's game down 0-2 after the top of the first but quickly came back due to some timely errors by the bottom half. Tied 2-2, the teams again traded runs to make it four-all entering the fourth. The Orediggers would go on an eight run streak into the ninth to put it out of reach 12-4. Justin Zamora would reach home on an error in the bottom of the ninth to give the game its final score of 12-5.
Â
Saturday's double header did not fare much better for the home team. In the first game Mines two in the first, two in the second, and one in the third to go up 5-0. Though the Grizzlies matched the Orediggers in hits with eight each, a
Grant Templin single to run in Tyson Zanski was all the team could produce in the 1-5 loss. Game two of the day got out of hand quickly with Mines jumping out to an 11-0 lead in only three and a half innings. Adams State would shave three off the deficit in the bottom of the fourth with a trio of singles scoring Tyson Zanski,
Tony Stanich, and Orlando Romero. Stanich would knock one out of the park for two RBI's in the final inning but the Orediggers cruised to a 16-5 win.
Â
ASU seemed poised for an upset in the final game today but solid play from the visitors and a few questionable calls ruined any upset hopes. CSM broke out to a six run lead after two innings and all seemed grim. Refusing to be embarrassed, the Grizzlies came back with seven runs in the fourth to take a one point lead. Head coach,
Jim Capra was ejected from the game during this stretch due to a dispute with the umpire. Without their fearless leader, the team continued to persevere after losing the lead but coming back within one. Unfortunately, the Orediggers would close the game hot scoring five runs through the top of the ninth, including two crushing homeruns. ASU would add one in the ninth but the game again went to Mines 15-10.
Â
Tony Stanich had a fairly good weekend with five RBI's, five hits, and three runs scored.
Dustin Kachel also put up numbers with four RBI's, seven hits, and three runs scored.Â
Â
The team will travel to Grand Junction, Colorado next weekend for a series with the 12
th ranked Mavericks. Mesa split their series with Regis this weekend.
