ALAMOSA – Adams State University women's softball team finished the sweep of Chadron State College this weekend to all-but write the team's ticket to the RMAC Championship. Adams finishes out the regular season on the road at MSU-Denver.
Â
The playoff picture looks good for Adams, who did enough to take the fate of the playoffs out of their hands. With a 14-18 conference record, Adams has a .438 win percentage in conference. Even with a sweep of losses to MSU-Denver, the team's .388 win percentage is better than that of eighth place CSU-Pueblo currently. CSU-Pueblo sits in the final spot and plays the conference leaders Colorado Mesa next weekend. Black Hills State University sits in the ninth spot while Chadron is 10
th. Chadron cannot overcome the win percentage difference with a sweep next weekend, and Black Hills would need to sweep UCCS next weekend and have an Adams State sweeping loss to overtake the final spot. A single win would clinch the Grizzlies spot in the playoffs.
Â
The Grizzlies took game one against the Eagles by a score of 4-1. Game two was taken 6-3 off of
Brittany Phillips going 3-for-3 at the plate for Adams, scoring a run and taking a pair of RBIs.
Hannah Wirtjes doubled to right center in the third to put up three runs on the board and put the game out of view.
Â
The second day was not as easy, as Chadron took an early four run lead. The Grizzlies tied it up with a
April Riggins triple to score one then Riggins crossing on an error that allowed Phillips to reach. The duo led to another run as Phillips sacrifice fly brought home Riggins in the sixth after a Riggins double that allowed her to advance to third on an error. Following that Wirtjes hit a triple then was interfered with sliding to third so was called home for the tying run.
Â
The game went to extra innings until the ninth when Chadron got the go ahead run off of a homerun. The bases became loaded after
Sarah Hansen walked, Sheridan Vanhoose had a single, and with two outs
Alexis Martinez walked. With bases loaded, a wild pitch looked to have Hansen stealing home for the run, but a late hit-by-pitch call by the umpire put
Tyler Hays on base with an RBI and the game tied. With bases load,
Shelby Haskins singled to left center for the walk off win.
Â
Game four was less exciting, as the Grizzlies took the lead off of three unearned runs in the third as Haskins drove in the second run of the game on a double, then Phillips brought her around for the final run.
Whitney Fields and
Kacee Schroeder both picked up a pair of wins, while Phillips picked up a save. Schroeder allowed just two earned runs in the wins, striking out a dozen and walking only three. Fields also had a dozen strikeouts, allowing just four earned runs.
