ALAMOSA – Adams State University men's lacrosse dropped two games on the road this weekend at Colorado Mesa and Westminster College. Despite the showing, Adams received national votes for the second time this season. The team wraps up its season this Saturday at CSU-Pueblo with a slight chance of making the RMAC Tournament with a blowout win. A win would also tie the school record for wins in a season.
Â
The first game was a good showing at Colorado Mesa, the No.10-ranked team in the nation. The team fell down early, dropping a scoreless half with a 5-0 deficit. A small run brought the score within four when
JD Van Arsdall opened scoring in the third quarter followed by
Alex Brydson on an assisted goal from
Kage Janes.
Â
Mesa would go on another run, scoring six straight before
Collin Cranfield scored with five minutes remaining.
Alex Hoduffer notched the final goal in the final 30 seconds of competition.
Â
The Grizzlies couldn't find their shots, putting up only 27 in the match, less than Mesa put on goal. Despite that the Grizzlies had 14 saves in the game and forced 23 turnovers. Faceoffs were a crucial part, with Mesa controlling the most at 16-5.
Â
Game two found another slow start, but
Jacob Austin found the score from a
Kale Wilson assist to make it 3-1 in the first. A five goal run put the Griffins up 9-1 before Janes scored in the final four minutes of the half. The half ending wasn't the key for Adams, as Westminster went on a 9-0 run with six unanswered in the third to take an early 16 goal lead.
Â
Jacob Coleman found the goal from
Brendan Williams to start the fourth quickly, then Wilson scored and Austin finished it off in the final two minutes.
Â
Groundballs were the key in this game, as Adams found 30 and Westminster picked up 50. The Grizzlies were also without an extra man situation in the game, giving them a disadvantage as there were three in the third the team had to deal with.
