NAMPA, Idaho – The Adams State University Women's Soccer team lost in their second game of the season to the Northern Nazarene University Saturday afternoon. The Grizzlies lost 4-3 to the Nighthawks to move to 1-1 on the season.
The Nighthawks struck first on a goal from Madi Taylor in the fifth minute to claim the 1-0 lead. Shortly after, Maddy Parton gave the Nighthawks a 2-0 lead with a goal of her own in 15th minute. The Grizzlies got on the scoreboard after a Breana Flores goal with a Gia Barone assist in the 38th minute. The Nighthawks took a 2-1 lead into halftime and held an 8-4 shots advantage.
Coming out of the break, the Grizzlies tied the game when Kendall Weld found the back of the net after a beautiful pass by Victoria Sanchez in the 53rd minute. Moments later, the Nighthawks struck again with a goal by Chandler Kauffman after Adams State goalkeeper Corri Zaiger initially deflected a corner kick that found Kauffman with an open net.
The Grizzlies stayed on the offensive attack as Brenna Oakey tied the game in the 57th minute with he rfirst goal of the season. The Nighthawks broke the tie when Kaisa Tsuruta scored in the 63rd minute. At one point in the second frame, the two teams combined to score four goals in ten minutes. The Nighthawks defense kept the Grizzlies off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game to seal the win.
Both teams put on an impressive offensive display as they combined for 26 shots, with 18 being on goal. Zaiger finished with six saves on ten shots on goal. In Adams State's first two games of the season, five different Grizzlies have scored a goal.
The Grizzlies will take on West Texas A&M University for their home-opener on Friday, September 7. The game is scheduled for 3 p.m. at ASU Soccer Field.
