LAKEWOOD, Colo. – The Adams State women's soccer team couldn't play spoiler for Colorado Christian University's home opener on Friday as they fell to the Cougars, 2-1. The Grizzlies drop to 2-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play. The win puts the Cougars at 3-4-2 overall and 2-3 in the conference. The cougars have won three straight games.
The Cougars got on the board early with a goal from Hannah Triem after an assist by Amanda Lopez. The remainder of the second half went quiet as both teams would be prevented from scoring. The Grizzlies and Cougars each had six shots in the first half. Corri Zaiger and the Adams State defense kept the game close with their defense. They only allowed one other shot on goal in the first half following the early score for the Cougars.
The Grizzlies fell into a 2-0 hole shortly after the second half began. In the 58th minute, Amanda Lopez added to her team-high in goals with her fifth of the season. The Grizzlies shortened the lead to one after Diana Cerillo scored after a Carly Kading assist with less than ten minutes to play in the game. Cerillo leads the Grizzlies in goals with five on the season. The remainder of the game went scoreless.
The Grizzlies had fourteen shots and six shots on goal while the Cougars had 16 shots with eight being on goal. Zaiger finished the game with six saves. Cerillo moves into third place in the conference in goals with five.
The Grizzlies will face Colorado School of Mines on Sunday, Sept. 30th at 12 p.m. Colorado School of Mines is currently 7-1-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play. The game will be played at Stermole Soccer Stadium in Golden, Colorado.
