FB | Grizzlies Hold Off Skyhawks in Another OT Thriller

ALAMOSA, Colo. - One overtime thrilling win was not enough for the Adams State University Football team as they went a second straight weekend needing extra time to secure a win. The Grizzlies held off the Fort Lewis Skyhawks, 48-42, Saturday afternoon inside Rex Stadium to secure win No. 3 on the season.

This weekend's game, like last week's, had some extra meaning to it as the Grizzlies and Skyhawks squared off in the 53rd Annual Musket Game. The game had a similar tune to the Colorado Classic game as it took overtime to determine a winner. With the win, the Grizzlies are now 3-2 on the year. For Head Coach Josh Blankenship this game gives him wins in both the Colorado Classic and Musket Game in his first year leading Adams State.

On the field, the Grizzlies and Skyhawks (1-4, 1-4 RMAC) put fans in attendance through a whirlwind of emotions as the game never seemed out of reach for either team until the very end.

The Grizzlies got out to a 14-0 lead in the first frame on a pair of Nick Rooney touchdown passes. His first of the game came quickly as he and the Grizzlies offense marched down the field on their opening possession. Rooney capped off an eight play 75 yard drive yard drive with an eight yard pass to Marquese Surrell. The Grizzlies 7-0 lead remained for much of the first quarter as defensive play showed out on both sides.

Adams State second touchdown of the quarter came late as Rooney found Surrell for a second time on a 15 yard pass. With the extra point, the Grizzlies took a 14-0 lead into the second quarter. Fort Lewis made sure the game stayed interesting scoring 17 unanswered in the second while hold Adams State to just seven.

The Skyhawks added their first score of the game with a 33 yard field goal attempt from Beau McCannon with 7:47 on the clock. The Grizzlies responded on the very next drive thanks in part to Rooney throwing his third touchdown of the half. He hit Chad Hovasse with a 33 yard strike with 5:48 to play, giving the Grizzlies a 21-3 edge after the extra point.

Fort Lewis then found some more life on offense on their next drive, scoring their first touchdown of the game. Quarterback Nick McNamee found Ta'Jon Mondy-Smith on a four yard pass. With the extra point the Grizzlies lead was cut to 11, 21-10. The Skyhawks defense carried that momentum into the next series as Cam Thierry picked off Rooney and took the ball back 60 yards for a touchdown. The two quick touchdowns cut Adams State's lead to 21-17 going into halftime.

The third quarter was a defensive battle from the start as both teams allowed just one touchdown each. The Skyhawks scored on their opening drive to grab a 24-21 lead and it seemed momentum was on their side but it never held through. McNamee found Arealous Hughes on 23 yard touchdown pass to give Fort Lewis a one possession lead.

The Grizzlies were un-phased and answered on their first drive of the second half. Tyree Harris scored from six yards out to give Adams State the lead back, 28-24, after the extra point. The Skyhawks almost had a counter late in the third quarter but Donovan Robinson pulled in an interception at the Grizzlies one-yard line to keep Fort Lewis from retaking the lead.

The Skyhawks almost countered again to start the fourth quarter. At second and goal from the Grizzly nine yard line McNamee looked for a quick pass to the end zone but Sipa Leafa picked him off to once again stall the Fort Lewis offense.

Leafa's interception was rewarded as Rooney found Keyon Thomas on a third and goal pass from 19 yards out. The touchdown gave Adams State was commanding 35-24 lead and it seemed the game was in their control. The Skyhawks had other plans.

McNamee started the Fort Lewis comeback with a four yard quick hit to Sam Kullberg for the touchdown. Fort Lewis got the two point conversion and the Grizzlies lead was cut to three, 35-32. The Skyhawks defense forced a quick three-and-out and McNamee immediately answered on the next drive with a 39 yard touchdown pass to Mason Hatton.

The Grizzlies once again held composure and scored on the ensuing drive. Harris once again provided the touchdown, this time from three yards out to give Adams State the lead back, 42-39 with :29 on the clock. The Skyhawks did not go away as they forced overtime.

McCannon hit a 49 yard field goal attempt that just snuck over the goal post to tie the game 42-all and force the Grizzlies second overtime game in as many weeks. Going into OT, the Skyhawks elected to go on defense first. Once again, enter Rooney, Miles Fishback and an offense refusing to let the Musket Game end on anyone else's terms but their own.

On the second play of the drive, Rooney hit Fishback on a fade route where only one person was going to make the catch. With enough space, Fishback grabbed the ball without any doubt to give the Grizzlies the final lead, 48-42. The defense used the offense's momentum and swarmed the Skyhawk attack to hold on for the win.

Rooney put together another solid performance racking up 420 yards of total offense. He completed 32 of 41 passes for 384 yards and five touchdowns. Surrell was the favorite target of Rooney, with 14 catches for 148 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Hovasse grabbed 10 receptions for 139 yards and a touchdown. Harris led the ground attack yet again with 115 yards on 23 touches and two touchdowns. Rooney added 36 yards on 11 keepers.

Garrett Pemelton had a solid day up front for Adams State with two sacks and a tackle for a loss. Vaega Lolohea and Zach Lewallen also added a sack. Isaia Rosten had eight tackles to lead the Grizzlies. Garrett Jackson and Leafa each had seven, while Bryce Barnes and Pemelton both totaled six, respectively.

The Grizzlies will look to carry their momentum of a three-game win streak into next weekend as they remain home to host Chadron State for Homecoming weekend. Kickoff against the Eagles is set for 1 p.m. inside Rex Stadium.
