Grizzlies Downed By Orediggers at Home

ALAMOSA, Colo. - It was a tale of two halves for Adams State Men's Basketball as the team dropped a 84-70 RMAC contest to Colorado School of Mines Friday night at home. The loss drops the Grizzlies record to 4-9 overall and 4-4 in conference play.

The Grizzlies had two different shooting performances in their home loss. In the first 20 minutes of play they shot 17-30 for 56.7% but were just 7-26 in the second half for 26.9%.

The Orediggers (11-3, 8-0 RMAC) were an even 40% in the first half on a 14-35 shooting performance to stay within seven, 42-35 of the Grizzlies. The second half they went 16-26 from the floor for 61.5% to secure the 14-point road win.

Adams State led by as much as 12 in the first half but it did not come until late in the frame as both teams went back-and-forth the majority of half. Despite the high percentage shooting, both teams were just 3-9 for 33.3% from three-point range in the first half.

Neither squad was able to create separation in the first 10 minutes of action with both staying within one possession of each other. A fastbreak jump shot from Davere Creighton gave the Grizzlies a 16-13 with 10:37 to play in the half.

Looking to respond, the Orediggers came down on the ensuing possession an scored a layup to stay within one, 16-15. The two teams continued to trade shots but a late run from the Grizzlies with under five minutes to play in the half help them create some space from the visitors.

Following a three-point play from Mines, it was 27-26 lead for Adams State with 4:24 to play in the half. Adams State then went on a 9-0 run to grab its first double-digit lead, 36-26. Back-to-back three-pointers from John Dewey and Shemar Johnson help start the run.

The Grizzlies largest lead of 12 points, 40-28, came with 1:41 left on the clock when Johnson pulled in a full-court bullet of a pass from Rickey Norris on the fastbreak attempt to score an easy layup. The Orediggers managed to score a few times before the break to only trail 42-35.

Mines managed to cut its deficit to five early in the second half, but a pair of quick layups from Dewey and Johnson, respectively, help Adams State maintain a nine-point edge, 46-37.

The Orediggers slowly began chipping away at the Grizzlies lead and outscored them 15-5 to take a one-point lead with 12:59 to play in the game. The run help the Orediggers grab a 52-51 lead and it was their first lead since the 11:54 mark of the first half when they led the Grizzlies 13-12.

The two teams traded the lead until it was a deadlocked tie at 58-all with 9:51 to play in regulation. Mines then pieced together a 7-0 run to lead 65-58 and never looked back.

Adams State managed to cut the Mines lead to five a pair of times but late foul calls against the home team combined with solid shooting from the visitors proved to be too much. The combination put Adams State into a double figure deficit that the team was not able to recover from.

Three Grizzlies scored in double figures led by Johnson's 19 points. He finished 8-12 from the floor and had three blocked shots to go along with two steals. Dewey added 14 points and was a perfect 5-5 at the free throw line. Norris chipped in 10 points to round things out. Creighton was the leading rebounder with eight boards and added seven points.

All five of the Orediggers starters scored in double figures with Mason Baker leading the charge. He scored a game-high 21 points on 6-9 shooting and went 6-6 from the charity strip.Ben Sonnefeld added 17 points, while both Michael Glen and Brendan Sullivan each scored 13 points. Ben Clare chipped in 11 points and had three blocked shots for the game.

The Grizzlies will look to bounce back tomorrow night as they host the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. Tip-off against the Mountain Lions will be at 7:30 p.m. inside Plachy Hall Gym.
