ALAMOSA, Colo. - The Adams State Women's Basketball team dropped its ninth straight game Friday night as the Grizzlies fell victim to a 59-48 setback at home to the Colorado School of Mine Orediggers. The Loss puts the Grizzlies record at 1-11 overall and 1-7 in the RMAC.
Helping Mines (7-6, 4-4 RMAC) secure its first road win of the season was a 40-26 rebounding advantage to go along with a 53.8 shooting percentage from three-point range on 7-15 shooting.
The Grizzlies shot their second highest percentage of the season from beyond the arc going 5-14 for 35.7%. Both teams finished the evening shooting under 40% as the Orediggers were 38.5% (20-52), while the Grizzlies were 34.7% (17-49).
Adams State only trailed by 10, 31-21, going into halftime but a fast start from Mines in the opening frame help them maintain a double figure lead for much of the evening. Mines outscored Adams State 17-7 in the first quarter and used a 10-0 run to lead by that much after one.
Stephanie Ruiz gave the Grizzlies their only lead of the game early on in the first quarter with a deep three-pointer to make a 3-2 game in the first 50 seconds of play. The Orediggers answered with their 10-0 to lea 12-3 before the Grizzlies scored again.
Both squads scored 14 points in the second quarter as the Grizzlies never allowed the Orediggers to create any comfortable separation. The Grizzlies held the Orediggers to just three points in the first 6:35 of the frame and got within four in that span.
Trailing 20-10 with 5:21 to play in the half, Adams State strung together a 6-0 run to cut Mines lead to 20-16. Four of Adams State's points came thanks in part to a
Brooke Neal three and foul from Mines to convert a four-point play.
Lowendie Laporal provided the final two points on a jumper in the paint.
Looking to stay out in front Mines answered with a 6-0 run of its own to go back up 10, 26-16. Ruiz added the final five points of the half for Adams State, while Mines managed to get out as much as 11 points in the final two minutes before leading by 10 at the break.
The Grizzlies managed to get within seven points of the Orediggers three in the third quarter but each time the visitors responded to stay up by 10 or more points. The Orediggers led by as much as 14 points in the third quarter before taking a 12-point lead, 46-34, into the fourth.
Adams State put up 14 points in the final 10 minutes of play to Mines 13. Despite the effort, Mines never allowed the Adams State to cut the game to single digits in the final 12 minutes, stretching back to the third, as they held on for the 11-point road win.
Ruiz led the way for the Grizzlies with a game-high 18 points. She shot 6-19 from the floor while going 4-7 from beyond the arc. Neal and
Madison Merschel each chipped in eight points, while Neal tallied a game best three steals. Both players each had four rebounds on the night.
Two Orediggers finished with double-digit points in Denali Pinto and Courtney Stanton. Pinto led the way with 13 and pulled down six boards. Stanton added 10 on a 4-7 shooting performance. Raven Herrara was the leading rebounder for the game with nine while chipping in in six points.
The Grizzlies will host University of Colorado-Colorado Springs tomorrow to close out the weekend. Tip-off against the Mountain Lions is slated for 5:30 p.m. inside Plachy Hall Gym.
