ALAMOSA, Colo.- The Adams State Grizzlies Wrestling team entered Thursday night's dual with CSU-Pueblo coming off four straight victories. They would make it five by the time the evening was over with an upset over the Thuderwolves in dominating fashion, with an overall final score of 22-15 against their conference foes.
The Grizzlies never trailed in the contest, maintaining control the entire way. Reigning RMAC Wrestler of the Week
Jonathan Andreatta set the tone with his 2-1 victory over Josiah Seaton the 125-pound weight class in the first match of the night.
After
Darek Huff would go down in the 133-pound match to deadlock the score at three a piece, 141-pounder
Dylan Udero made sure that this tie would not last, as he dominated Paul Garcia of the Thunderwolves 5-0 to put the Grizzlies back up.
Following him in the 149-pound bout,
Noah Hermosillo would increase the Grizzlies lead with his 11-3 victory by way of major decision, with the overall score after 10-3 in favor of the Grizzlies.
Ryan Rochford held his own following Hermosillo in his 157-pound battle with CSU-Pueblo's Isaiah Diggs, but would fall short in a 7-3 decision in favor of Diggs.
Just when it seemed as though the Thunderwolves may gain momentum, Koery Wyndham took Gavin Melendez into overtime with a 1-1 tie in the 165-pound contest, and earned the Grizzlies a crucial victory in extra-time. From there,
Isaac Lopez would win by way of forfeit at there would be no 174-pound match, and this was another six points for Adams State to put them up 19-6, seemingly in control.
Seventh-Ranked CSU-Pueblo, however was not finished just yet, as they would fight right back into the dual with victories in the 184 and 197-pound classes to make the score 19-15 still in favor of the Grizzlies with one match left.
In the heavyweight bout, Adams State's
James Romero would take matters into his own hands and destroy all doubt, as the upset would be complete following his thrilling 5-4 victory over Pueblo's Gavin Nye to win it for the Grizzlies 22-15.
Whether it was a chip on their shoulder or just pure grit, the Grizzlies clawed their way right back into the RMAC race Thursday night with the victory over the heavily-favored Thunderwolves. Up next, they travel to Colorado Mesa for what should be another highly-contested RMAC dual in Grand Junction next Thursday, Jan. 31.
