Grizzlies Down Cougars on the Road

LAKEWOOD, Colo. - Adams State Men's Basketball to moved to .500 in conference play with a 73-63 road win Friday night at Colorado Christian. With the win, the Grizzlies improve to 6-11 overall and an even 6-6 in RMAC competition.

The Grizzlies improved to 3-3 in true road games for the season as the team shot 40.6% on 26-69 made shots to earn the 10-point road win against the Cougars (4-14, 2-10 RMAC). Four players scored in double figures for Adams State, including three starters.

Adams State trail 10-4 early on but never allowed CCU to establish a double figure lead. Trailing 15-10 with 11:57 on the clock, Adams State strung together an 8-0 run to get in front of CCU. Back-to-back layups from Justice Augmon and Rickey Norris, respectively, gave the visitors a three-point lead, 18-15.

The Cougars responded and tied the game at 18-all with a quick three but never manged to retake the lead for the rest of the night. Shemar Johnson gave the Grizzlies their largest lead of the first half at six points, 30-24, on a layup with 4:43 to play until halftime.

The Grizzlies shot 38.2% in the first 20 minutes of action, while the Cougars were just under that mark at 37.5%. Despite going 0-8 from three-point range, the Grizzlies did manage to outscore the Grizzlies 24-14 in the first half and held a slim 23-21 edge in rebounds going into the break.

Coming out of the halftime break both teams kept their respective offensive rhythms going and the game stayed within six points through the first 10 minutes of play. Adams State led by as much as six points in that time span and a Norris layup with 12:49 on the clock gave the visitors a 44-28 advantage.

With both teams trading made buckets the role of hero had yet to be cast. Enter John Dewey and Davere Creighton who combined for 17 points in the final 9:02 of the second half to help lift the Grizzles past the Cougars.

Both Dewey and and Creighton came up clutch in the game's final nine minutes as the duo hit three pointers and free throws down the stretch to lift the Grizzlies to the 10-point road victory.

A made free throw from Dewey with 20 seconds on the clock gave Adams State it's largest lead of the night at 11 points, 72-61, as the visitors picked up a second straight win to stay in the hunt for a postseason berth to the conference tournament.

Dewey tied the game-high in scoring with 16 points to lead the Grizzlies. He also had four assists to lead the team to go along with five rebounds on the night. Creighton posted a double-double with 13 points scored and a game-high 14 boards. He also tallied three steals on the night. Johnson also put up 13 points along with five rebounds. Norris chipped in 12 points off the bench and also grabbed five rebounds.

Justin Engesser led the way in scoring for CCU with 16 points on 6-10 shooting and had nine rebounds Braxton Tucker put up 14 points and also had nine rebounds for the Cougars. Jeremiah Hanson rounded the night out chipping in 12 points on 5-15 made shots from the floor.

The Grizzlies will be back in action tomorrow night, Jan. 26, in Denver against Regis. Tip-off against the Rangers is set for 5 p.m.
