Late Rally Pushes Grizzlies Past Cougars

LAKEWOOD, Colo. - The Adams State Women's Basketball team snapped a 12-game skid Friday night with a 67-48 road win at Colorado Christian. With the win, the Grizzlies are now 2-14 overall, and 2-10 in RMAC play.

The Grizzlies went shot-for-shot with the Cougars (8-10, 6-6 RMAC) in the first half as they scored 13 points in each of the first two quarters. The Cougars scored 14 points apiece in each of the first two quarters to lead the 28-26 at the break.

The second half belonged to Adams State as the team outscored CCU 41-20 to secure the 19-point road win. A big help in leading Adams State to its first road win of the season was 60% shooting on 15-25 made shots while holding CCU to just 29.2% (7-24) shooting.

The opening frame showcased what was a back-and-forth first half as the two teams traded made buckets. The Grizzlies trailed midway through the first but a pair of Ki'asha Harris free throws gave the team a 9-8 lead with just over three minutes to play in the quarter.

Back-to-back layups from Zakiya Beckles gave the Grizzlies a 13-10 lead late in the first quarter but a quick 4-0 run from the Cougars help them establish a 14-13 lead after the first 10 minutes of play. The two squads replicated their first quarter point totals to make it a two-point game at the break.

The Cougars opened the second quarter with a 10-0 run to grab an 11 point lead, 24-13, and it seemed the game was about to open up points wise. The Grizzlies responded with a 13-0 run to grab a 26-24 lead with just under two minutes left in the half.

Beckles played a key role as she scored the first seven points of the run. Danielle Jimenez and Harris capped the run with back-to-back three pointers, respectively, to give the Grizzlies the one possession lead. The Cougars answered with a with a quick 4-0 run yet again to lead 28-26 at the half.

The third quarter, along with the second half as a whole, belong to the Grizzlies. Coming out of the break they held the Cougars to 13 points and scored 22 to lead 48-41 going into the fourth. Both teams made shots early on but late surges from the Grizzlies help them lead by seven after the third quarter.

Brooke Neal scored seven of her nine points in the third quarter to help the Grizzlies lead going into the fourth. Helping push the game in the Grizzlies favor was Marshell Hollins and Harris as the duo scored a combined nine points in the frame. Madison Merschel hit a jump shot late in the quarter to push the lead to seven points with one quarter left to play.

The final quarter belonged to Adams State as the team scored 19 points and held CCU to just seven. An 8-2 run to open the quarter gave the Grizzles a 56-43 run over the Cougars. The run proved to be a back breaker as the home team scored just five points the rest of the way through.

The Grizzlies had three players put up double-digit points en route to the 19-point win. Beckles led the charge with 15 points off the bench on 7-13 shooting. Harris was not far behind scoring 12 points as a reserve as well. She shot 3-5 overall and was a perfect 5-5 at the free throw line. Merschel was the third double figure scorer chipping in 10 points on a 5-7 shooting performance. She also tied the team led in rebounds with five.

Marie Tsoungui was the only CCU player in double figures with 10 points. She shot 4-6 from the floor and grabbed nine rebounds on the night. Sarah McGinley was the game leader in rebounds with 10 and chipped in six points to go along with two blocked shots.
