Late Rally Lifts Eagles Past Grizzlies

CHADRON, Neb. - Adams State Men's Basketball came up just short of a road win Friday night as they dropped a 93-86 contest to Chadron State. The loss put the Grizzlies record at 3-8 and 3-3 in the RMAC.

A big help in the win for the Eagles (6-6, 4-2 RMAC) was the points off turnovers differential, 37-12.The Grizzlies had 20 turnovers, which was just two more than the Eagles but the home team was able to convert more opportunities.

The first half was back-and-forth between the two teams as it was tied 41-all going into the break. The Grizzlies largest lead of the game came in the first half. They jumped out to an eight-point lead with 8:59 to play in the half, 31-23.

The game was tied at 5-5 early on in the game but a 11-4 run help the Grizzlies establish a 16-9 advantage. The Eagles managed to stay within striking distance and never let the visitors grab a double-digit lead.

Adams State pushed its lead back to eight one more time with 4:03 left in the half thanks in part to a Shemar Johnson three-pointer. The shot put Adams State up 38-30 but CSC closed out the final four minutes of play with an 11-3 run to tie the game at the break.

The Eagles won the shooting the battle in the first 20 minutes of play going 50% on 14-28 made shots. The Grizzlies shot the ball well as well going 14-30 for 46.7 shooting percentage. Keeping the Eagles in the game was a 5-10 shooting performance from beyond the arc, while the Grizzlies were just 3-11 from deep.

Adams State played from behind for nearly the first five minutes but never trailed by more than five. The game was tied just two more time in the first ix minutes of play of the second half. 

RJ Brown managed to get the Grizzlies within one, 56-55, with 11:16 to play in regulation but the Eagles once again responded to stay out in front. Despite keeping the game within reach the majority of the second half, the Grizzlies were not able to get enough stops to retake the lead.

With 5:26 left to play in the game, CSC led 75-69 and then went on a quick 6-0 run to grab its largest lead of 12 points. The quick run took just 61 seconds and gave the home team a 81-69 edge.

The Grizzlies strung together one finally rally and got within three, 86-83, with 49 seconds left on the clock but it was not enough as the Eagles held on for the seven-point victory.

Five Grizzlies scored in double figures led by Johnson who had a game-high 23 points on a 10-17 shooting performance. John Dewey added 18 points and was a perfect 10-10 at the free throw line. Davere Creighton posted a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Szymon Walczak and Brown rounded out the double-digit scoring with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Adams State finished the night with a 48.3 shooting percentage on 29-60 shooting. They wnt just 4-17 from three-point range on 4-17 made triples but finished 24-28 from the free throw line for 85.7%.

Four Eagles finished with 10-plus points led by a pair of 20-point performances from Colby Jackson and Adoum Mbang, respectively. Jackson shot 4-6 from yje floor and was 10-11 from the charity strip. Mbang finished 8-11 shooting in 23 minutes of play off the bench. Diontae Champion had adouble-double night and nearly had a triple-double as he finished with 16 points, 12 rebounds, and eight assists. Brady Delimont rounded things out with 11 points.

The Eagles shot 29-56 for 51.8% and was 7-19 from three-point range for 36.8%. They were 28-36 from the free throw line for 77.8%.

The Grizzlies have a quick turnaround as they will be back on the floor tomorrow night for a road game at MSU Denver. Tip-off against the Roadrunners is set for 7 p.m. inside the Auraria Event Center.
